Best Guitarist

I think one of the most forgotten guitarists is Eddie Hazel. Dude Died relatively young, and really was most successful with the Funkadelic. Dude....could...shred.

Maggotbrain is by far one of the most emotionally charged guitar solos I've ever heard. If you haven't listened to this tune, please do so. Its absolutely amazing.

Awesome song, I also really enjoy the Widespread Panic version.

Probably not everyone's choice of music but this guy has won numerous fingerstyle guitar awards.

Another one of him

People have already mentioned so many good ones...

Like InaWord mentioned, Alex Skolnick...and some others--

Akira Takasaki (from the Japanese band Loudness)
Yngwie Malmsteen
John 5 (Manson and Rob Zombie)
Dave Mustaine (very underrated)
Marty Friedman
Uncle Ted
Jake E Lee
Randy Rhoads
George Lynch
Kyle Gass!

And a couple that kind of go unnoticed because they don't really show it in the songs...John Mayer (it pains me) and Brad Paisley

Even though I'm not a country fan keith urban can flat out play too.

Also, youtube andy mckee. Not a shredder but just a unique playing style.

Of the I've seen in person, Buddy Guy, Richard Thompson, Al Dimeola, and David Gilmour.

John Mclaughlin overall.

Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal) , Trey Azagthoth (Morbid Angel), Sammy Duet (Goatwhore), Jeff Hanneman (Slayer), Nergal (Behemoth), Tony Iommi (Sabbath), Pat O'Brien (Cannibal Corpse), Corporate Death (Macabre), Trevor Peres (Obituary), Dimabag, Terrence Hobbs (Suffocation), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar/Down) and of course the godfather himself Chuck Schuldiner (may have spelled that wrong).

Brian May - Queen

If you just youtube videos of him of his solo's and such are amazing. Very innovative.

I can agree with a lot of the names thrown around here and it is all your personal taste so I respect that from all of you.

It really comes down to style. For example, Stanley Jordan is an amazing guitarist who uses both hands to play strings at the same time (amazing to watch). Joe Satriani is another amazing guitarist that is mesmerizing to watch. Stevie Ray Vaughn is one of the top blues guitarists. When it comes to jazz I love George Benson. Overall, one of my favs is Eric Clapton. A rocker that is impressive is Journey's Neal Schon. He started playing with Santana at about age 16 playing on Santana III.

proficiency + showmanship + songwriting, etc. ? Prince definitely top-15 in the world.

I'm not a huge fan but his persona and mysteriousness overshadows and distracts from his guitar talent. The guy is amazing.

Wow no mention of Angus Young. The dude puts on one helluva show. The guy must take around a dozen bottles of 5 Hour Energy before each show.

Malmsteen
Slash
Warren DeMartini of Ratt
George Lynch
