@docpoco Best of luck to you guys for the rest of the year. Feel free to come back to the board when we play you guys next year. I'm sure the fans making the trip down to Jonesboro would appreciate any tips you have for tailgating and good eats.
We will have our big tailgate set up close to the stadium for the ISU game next year, and there will be an open invitation and plenty of food for everyone on here except for Coachhines3 unless one of you agrees to escort him.

I will definitely be back and genuinely am rooting for your team the rest of the season. Wholly impressed by everything you guys did yesterday, including the crowd and tailgate scene.

I was mostly impressed by how fundamentally sound your defense plays. We didn't help ourselves obviously, and injuries have mounted. But the Cyclone defense was smothering. It was kinda neat to watch just wish it was against someone else.

It was really not that fun. See you guys next year. First beer in the stands is on me.

We are close if not.

For instance Michigan, 50 yard line season donation cost $850, which our donation is either $7500 or $15K for those, cant find the cost of the tickets at Michigan, but at that donation level required It should be quite a bit lower.

KState Max regular seat tickets are $400. Their donation levels are $1300 for their highest tier not including clubs.
Here is their req donations for seats. compare that to Iowa state.

here is wvu, WAY cheaper than ISU. $500 donation for 50 yrd line, and tickets at only $399 vs $650 here.

OSU 50 yard line. $250 season tix, $1100 donation max, less on one side. Considering we cant even sniff a 50 yrd line seat without at least donating $7500, probably $15K, then add $650 per ticket.

Prior to expansion we had the lowest number of donors and some of the lowest donations in the league (and P5). I wonder if the donor levels and ticket prices are a reflection of a smaller number of actual donors carrying the financial support of the AD. In other words we have higher “prices” because we have to rely on a smaller number of donors Who then have to pay more to make it work.

This is a catch 22 though.

You can end up pricing people out, then you have even less people, paying/donating, only to lead to the need to increase again and the cycle repeats.

I remember an old golf course I used to belong to. They were losing members, so they raised fees, in turn more members stopped paying and less people joined, so... they raised memberships again, and it became an endless cycle.

In this example people realised they could not play enough to make the membership worth while. So they saved money by just paying green fees. There were not enough perks or reasons to be a member outside of just green fees.

What has happened at Iowa State, is they have continued to raise tickets and donation requirements to even maintain your seat or parking. And people are starting to realize you can get as good or better seats by just purchasing tickets individually for each game and save a lot of money. And there are not enough perks to make paying those donation and season ticket prices. Especially if you are not buying season tickets to multiple sports and going to all the games.

And people have less and less extra money for these things all the time. This is why all kinds of recreation products and services have continued to see less and less people, which has been happening for a long time.

I get it but what is the AD to do? The donor base has modestly grown, as have donations. It’s the 80/20 rule and we are putting greater on the 20. we need more of the 80 to step up. A poll I did a couple of years ago showed that half here at CF don’t donate/support, can’t imagine how low the percentage is among the casuals.

Looking at the (overachieving vs. support) success we’ve had with FB, MBB, WBB; not to mention the realignment risk ISU has been in, I don’t know what it will take for more to get involved. The AD is in a tough spot and it’s only getting tougher. There is definitely a break point on pricing and we must be approaching it with the reduction in FB season tickets sales.

I agree with you.

We are between a rock and a hard place. Not sure there is a good answer. I originally was just saying that our costs may be a reason we are seeing less people in the stands and sales of season tix. And that they are on the high end of CFB.

This of course is compounded when people have less available free money for this kind of thing.

We gave up our season tickets this year for these reasons, I miss going, but it just didnt pencil out anymore. Maybe it will again someday but right now for us it doesnt.

Yes, we agree. I appreciate the discourse. Usually when I bring up donations it’s a thread killer.

Has anyone been able to join that Coogfan board? I tried to get an account but it wasn't working properly and never sent me the confirmation email.

Ticket prices could be part of that, ours are on the higher end of tickets in P4, probably among the highest in the B12, if not the highest, especially when figuring in the required donation level for sections.
It's probably because other B12 schools have a much more robust donor base. They don't need to charge so much

Very interesting dilemma. And one I fear Iowa State will continue to fall further behind. Sadly, the 'business' acumen is slanting the wealth scale not seen since the 1920s. It'd be fascinating to see who the wealthiest Iowa State alumns are and what industry they created their wealth in. Is Iowa State producing talent in those areas? Or, at the very least, is Iowa State teaching students how to protect their contributions?

I think it's mostly patents on the Rice Krispies treats recipe.
