Arizona Postgame Thread

Do you understand that no matter what condition your body is in, there are some positions that your body is just not supposed to be in, and that injuries will ALWAYS happen? If you put enough stress on a joint, it WILL tear. There are very large men on that field applying incredible force to the other men on that field. Believe it or not, they CAN injure someone.
In addition there were a couple of plays with questionable activity going on that seemed to lead directly to our players' injuries. On one kick off return their #30 seemed to be on top of our guy (deep back up TE, I think) and shoving his forearm into his throat repeatedly. On Big Citrus's second injury it looked like #12, Spivey threw a punch to the neck or something while Orange was down.

I love physical play, but I am not a fan of dirty play. It looked like Spivey in particular was always trying to do something after the whistle to draw a cheap PF penalty.

Breece Hall was incredibly elusive.

His movement was much more of a plant and go type vs. juking but he was super elusive and deceiving at that.
Breece is also elite at setting up his blockers. He will often make a subtle movement to move the next defender so his blocker in an okay position is suddenly in a great position to make a solid block.

I think the most exciting thing about this Arizona win is seeing Sowell breakout. We need a WR1 badly and he has to be that guy for us.

If we can get consistent WR play (its been solid but spread out), that should allow us to re-open the tight end game. Brahmer has 3 catches over the past 2 weeks and Burkle only had 2 against Arizona. If teams now have to more closely defend those over the tops throws, hopefully that allows us to target the TEs a bit more.

I’m concerned that Overby’s drops are becoming a “thing.” Trust is key for QB & WR, and I suspect he will get fewer targets. Needs to clean that up. Still young and I believe in him to fix it.

This team is huge too. Oline averages 320 lbs, Hansen is a big back. Most of our line backers are 6'3'' or taller. When you have size and depth you can just dominate teams and that's what we saw against Arizona.
This caught me by surprise this game. I was looking at one a receiver lining up in pass formation (don't remember who) and commented on how tiny he looked next to the line...
Then I looked him up and he was 6'1, 200 lbs or thereabouts. So I started looking at the numbers for the O line. I'm used to our O line being smaller than most of our opponents' D lines, but it was a pleasant surprise to see that we actually have really huge dudes out there. :D

He's been getting less reps now that Townsend and Sowell appear to be "fully" acclimated. Overby hasn't had many snaps the previous two games (AZ and Ark St), I think around 10 a game.

Other than Bruns I wouldn’t consider any member of CF or IE to be a football expert.
Agreed. As a caveat to this, while Blum
Is not a football or player personnel expert evaluator, he is an expert in his field.

And I’m pretty sure the coaches aren’t varnishing anything when they tell him about the young players who are flashing, and they really, really want to keep around.

And we get the trickle down from that process.

Sama had a very bad night, almost never followed his blockers. Tried to take on Arizona all by himself almost every play. Time to try someone else.

Kill me for this, but with our injuries, any chance Sama could play corner? Might be his best shot at the league.

I'm with you on this.
My son, who plays high school football (mostly JV) even pointed out how Sama rarely follows his blockers and takes the easy 3-7 yards. (neither of us are experts, I just mean it's even obvious to a teen!)
It seems he has not yet got over "high school syndrome" where he thinks he can just out-juke everyone on defense every time.
