Arizona Postgame Thread

P.S. Three other thoughts:

01. I loved going for two on the first possession (due to the kicker situation).
02. I loved the late FG (due to the kicker situation).
03. I had my first corn dog ever, and I had acid reflux in the middle of the night.

Let's Go State!
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but somehow I think you're a boomer. So, join the club. I now can count the foods I don't get acid reflex from cause there's no way I can keep track of the foods I do get it from.

The rules analyst ESPN went to, said the flag should’ve been picked up because of the push. I disagree with that. Curious what others think
In real time, from the normal camera angle, I was convinced it was a block in the back by Flora, and shouldn't be a penalty on AZ.

On the replay, from a different angle behind Flora, it looks a lot more like Flora touched the guys back, but never really made any amount of differential contact.

I just rewatched the original view, and yeah, Flora barely touches him. The guy just absolutely nuked Townsend.

I was there and people around me were mad he didn't ejected when there wasn't anything beyond the hit on the returner.

He definitely did lean into it but it was a 'good/clean' hit.

I guess if you're going to commit the penalty might as well make them feel it.
I yelled “kick him out of the game” even though I had no idea if there was any rule violation that would warrant that. Even as it came out of my mouth I knew it was a little silly. I almost never yell, though (sober fan), and it seemed to kind of stir up my section. Everyone wanted that dude gone. lol.

Williams isn’t really the one I was talking about. But cooper, Cummings-Coleman, ta’shawn James, and dom orange all getting injured in one game? And not off of weird stuff like Williams but off routine things. Last year was also horrible for injuries obviously, one of the worst in my lifetime. This is a pattern under this S&C regime. Not calling for heads just saying there is a way to reduce the likelihood of this happening with improved S&C.
It’s a physical sport, and we have to play with an edge.

If injuries aren’t happening, we’re probably not playing the way we need to

I know the program says Ankeny but he’s a Roosevelt kid. His dad and uncles all played there, fun group. Glad to see a DMPS kid playing so well in big time college football. Rare these days.
He was awesome last night. He's just one of those guys who has a nose for the ball and makes huge plays all over the field.

What was going on with I35 south? Two or three Highway patrol with lights passed everyone using the shoulder but we never saw what was causing the problem

Congrats on the win; very impressive. We were manhandled on both sides of the line. We wanted a measuring stick, and we got it ... right across the knuckles. We still have our kicking game concerns. The offense should improve as the year goes on, but it's a little discouraging to see the defense pushed around between the tackles so much and to let people get behind them the way they did. On the other hand, you've got one of the more physical teams we'll see this year. We should be able to rebound against OK St, but we'll still have questions. It may shape up as one of those "any given Saturday" seasons for us. Good luck the rest of the way. You should be right in the mix.
When Fifita gets in rhythm, he can be scary good. The TD drive right before halftime was a great drive capped by an absolute laser of a throw. And ISU had really good coverage on that play too.

I think your D will continue to improve and running tempo O with Fifita should result in a lot of points going forward. Your RB's a stud as well.

AZ should be a tough game for everyone left on your schedule. And if you guys clean up some of the mistakes from last night, then AZ could win a lot of those games.

Sure this was discussed in game thread, but I was curious what TV said about what seemed like a viscous illegal hit by Arizona on that punt return at end of 1st.

I agree the flora push impacted and should be considered, but disagree that the flag should have been picked up. 43 for Arizona made no attempt to avoid contact and voluntarily accelerated into the hit.

Did 43’s actions fit neatly into a specific penalty… not really, he was slightly pushed and it wasn’t targeting (barely missed head / neck) but that seems like behavior we want to discourage.

Seemed like good refereeing in a gray area.
He leveled a defenseless player; targeting isn't just helmet to helmet contact.

Moberly outrushed Sama. Didn't see that coming.
Sama had a very bad night, almost never followed his blockers. Tried to take on Arizona all by himself almost every play. Time to try someone else.

Kill me for this, but with our injuries, any chance Sama could play corner? Might be his best shot at the league.

As always, the Bruns podcast was good today.

But I do have a point of discussion with a lot of the talk we hear from the CF and Iowa Everywhere guys---not Ben---but a lot of the podcast guys/facilitators. A topic of conversation always seems to be how Campbell seems to be slaying a lot of dragons the past couple of years. And I completely agree that we have been at a higher level the last two years. But it always seems like the insinuation is that we should be surprised at how good we are compared to the early Campbell years and that it is some huge shock that after 10 years we are good. And I contend things were pretty much elevated from the start. From the road wins to the winning conference records to our overall record, we have been in rarified air since 2017. I guess my point is that it is pretty damn cool that we are continuing to grow and get better. We didn't just peak in 2020 and then fall back into mediocrity. And that is pretty amazing. This ride has been incredibly fun from that win at Oklahoma to now.

Ever since we beat Oklahoma on the road with a LB for a quarterback, yeah, it's been pretty consistently elevated. Even the first year, you could see the improvement and excellent coaching.

My pet peeve across CF and IE analysis is making everyone we play seem like the ‘85 Bears. It’s happened 5 straight weeks now, including against South Dakota.

I get it, it’s an emotional hedge but at some point, a top 15 team that has demonstrated high success for 2 straight seasons is better than most teams on their schedule.

At this point Kstate is half a game infront of AZ in the conference even though they lost to them. These non conference games between conference teams are awful.
I'm guessing KState will end up being pretty decent. Their schedule is brutal though. Baylor, TCU, Tech, and Kansas the next 4 games. I can see them getting two of those.

Were you in section 33? If so, I heard you

Man, watch Jontez sit back to let the play action develop and point out exactly where the targeted receiver is. He probably flipped the field by 40 yards from the wide-open receiver to where he ultimately ran out of bounds.
Incredible read/play to follow the route behind him. It'd be almost impossible for the QB to see him coming.

I’m just gonna address the second part.

A. “With our injuries”? There’s a grand total of one at corner. At least, at the top of the depth chart.

B. We already have one guy who hasn’t played corner since HS in Beni, and he’s not there yet. Why swith Abu midseason?

C. Sama is a junior. Jontez and Tre are juniors, and Coop will likely be back next year. Where do you expect him to play, to “get to the NFL”?

D. After that trio is gone, Beni, David Coffey , Quentin Taylor and Mason Ellens all have NFL potential, and three of those are decidedly ahead of him. Plus, we have a couple of really talented commits.

Honestly, I’m not sure where or when he’d play at corner, even if he redshirted in ‘26. That ship has sailed.

I wouldn't go that far.

Breece's ability to hit a hole regardless of patience or vision was quite literally next level as we see today.

If Sama has those qualities I don't see him making it in the league.

I guess what I’m saying is that Sama has pretty similar build and speed to Breece. And neither are super elusive. Both have good contact balance. What Sama lacks is the vision, patience and decisiveness that Breece has. And those things are incredibly important for a RB. I will say that Breece is a much, much better receiver out of the backfield.

Other than Bruns I wouldn’t consider any member of CF or IE to be a football expert. Just because the media gets access to the teams doesn’t mean they know much more about the game, but it does mean they get the narrative the team is putting out there mainlined into their veins. Hence CW treating every upcoming team like they’re the football equivalent of Jesus, because Campbell loves to put that narrative out there.

I thought Woody gave the best analysis in the lead up, basically said that that Arizona defense can screw you up but if you handle their twists they’ll run themselves out of position just like they did.

It was stadium highway patrol, they wanted to get home quicker. ;):D

Actually I have no idea but I like this reason.

Go to the Cincy pregame thread. I understand the nut cup theory. But you have to accept we are also pretty good.
I'm a nut cup guy in mbb but I thoroughly expect TJ and Co. To make the tourney every yr. Why? Because it is what he does.
Campbell and Co. I begin to expect them to be +.500 yr in and yr out and hopefully 8 wins +.
