All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Not to be curt, but it's been well established that ISU took the non-Jiri scholarship hit in one year.

If you're scenario is correct, then JP acted in a manner clearly contrary to the purpose of the contractual language.

depends. lets say we took the Jiri hit in 06'. Then APR was supposed to be a scholly loss in 07' and 08.' Maybe JP and GMac sat down and decided it was better to take them right away. Then technically it could be determined as three years wiht lost schollies. I am not saying that is how it happened but it could have happened that way and would explain three year extension.

Re: Another coach gone and McD still here

maybe 60 years ago but what does he do now? it is not like he is a famous alum that can help bring in recruits. It is not like we can bring a recruit in here and then bring in Thompson to talk to him. they would say who the hell is this old guy.

wow.. what have you personally contributed to the basketball program, or the athletic program in general? Willing to bet thompson drops and has done a TON more than you.. have some respect...

That's not my question. My question is who had the authority to decide they were going to do that - JP or McD?

Apologies. It's my understanding that it was the AD's decision with McDermott's input.

No, technically it couldn't be. The ONLY question is, how many years was ISU without its full allottment of scholarships.

It doesn't matter in the least whether they could have chosen to take the scholarship loss over three years, if in fact, they were taken all at once.

Read the contract.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Taz, that makes no sense. Please read my reply to that post. If they were taken all at once he's not entitled to three years, he's only entitled to one. The contract is about the NUMBER OF YEARS McDermott is without scholarships.

See what incyte posted. Let's say it was supposed to be over 3 years. There could have been an agreement that the three years would be honored and they accepted taking the hit in one year.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

The funny/sad thing is McD is not doing any better when it comes to graduating players. Just look at how many players leave each year. This year we have Pomlee, Buckley, Staiger, and Hamilton that all count against us.

Graduate? Graduate? Heck, we just want to see them finish the school year out.

As I said earlier, if that's the case, then it's not an automatic extension triggered by the contract. It's discretionary. And it is also contrary to the characterization of the Athletic Department that the extension was an automatic extension.

Re: Another coach gone and McD still here

I know what he said to the media...I asked if you had any knowledge of conversation between Dendy and Mac, if you don't that's fine, just curious.

That doesn't really matter does it, because what matters is what is being portrayed to the public. And it doesn't look good on Mac when it looks like the players are the one controlling the situation and not him.

Looks like we had a better team with fewer scholarships.

So you are saying the contract gave us the choice to extend at our pleasure which we did since we knew we had a great team bound for the NCAA. Well, stuff happens, especially for this coach.

I would respond, but I'm not exactly sure what it is you're asking. Although, I get the distinct feeling that your question was purely rhetorical anyway.

I think taz and I agree with you. Three years is not in the original contract. JP and McD have a mutal unwritten agreement seperate from the contract that he can get three years without having to spread the schollies out over three years for the good of the progam.

Which is fine. I'm on board with that scenario. But then don't tell us (as the AD did) that the McDermott extension was because of an automatic extension. Because it wasn't. It was an agreement that was ancillary, and discretionary.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Hey great Thompson donates a lot of money and was a really good basketball player a long time ago. That doesn't mean that it was a good decision by him and Jamie to hire McDermott as the coach of this team or to keep supporting him even though he is losing.

Agreed. At least part was automatic. Some appears to be discretionary.

I assume the athletic department will contest the discretionary part when his buy-out is negotiated next year.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

To an extent...Carr, Stinson, and Blalock were already out the door and rumors indicated that Taggart was iffy. One could argue that Stinson and Blalock knew what was coming but they did announce 3 days before the firing, I think. We'll probably never know for sure with Taggart. Evanovich may have been gone to since he wasn't getting any playing time.

That does not sound any worse than the large number of migrating players this year. We lost Pomlee (kicked off like a Mike Taylor), Lucca to the German pro bench, Buck, Ham, Gilstrap due to NCAA Gestapo, and CB to some pro team. Now, if we do not lose a scholarship or two from this year, why were we so penalized from the changeover post Wayne. There must be some more shoes to drop from the NCAA for this mumbo jumbo season. We woill probably hear the NCAA news in late Apr. We may not have a smany jucos as we think. We may be looking for walk-ons.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Jim Tressell got extended at Ohio State, maybe we should extend McDermott then?

Doesn't matter if you want to keep spouting crap...Does matter if you wanted truth.

But there is less flack if you call it an automatic extension. It is like the deem and pass in Congress.
