And that term makes total sense given what we can provide more than anyone else is "leeway". I was having a conversation with a friend about how many losing seasons Campbell could have in a row before his seat was even remotely hot. I put the number at a minimum of 5 years.

He's built up goodwill here that will allow him to endure the inevitable ebbs and flows that come with coaching college football. Other programs? Not so much.

5? If we give someone leeway for 5 losing seasons, we've thrown away the program and committed ourselves to failure.

I mean there's a reason I've seen Kirk ferentz grocery shopping at 230 am in Iowa city.

My question would be - why is a college football or basketball coach out grocery shopping anyway? Seems like they could hire someone to do this, have their wife do it, or do the HyVee delivery thing.

Because Kirk ferentz wife is well known to be the absolute worst I'd imagine this was also a decade ago.

The HyVee delivery/pickup things takes forever. The selection process is kinda pokey, and they don't care to get the right stuff, so there's added time sorting through, getting it fixed, going for the right stuff, etc.

It's just easier not to bother with that service.

I would also add about the "unreal fan support"

I think what is different at ISU is that the fans show up (for the most part) through thick and thin.
5 years of 6-7 wins at OU, LSU, etc get you fired and the fans stop going to the games.
The coaching staff is probably getting death threats if they haven't been fired already.

ISU is like a a really nice startup company that is just ready to go nuts, but stupid crap like realignment, NIL and some bad luck is slowing it a bit.

I also think he stays for reason Pollard stays. A lot of flexibility and you don't have oil tycoon donors back seat driving you the whole time.
Although I would like to think you are correct, history says you are not. I have been going to games since 1969. When we are down, people don’t show up.

But, I agree with the rest of your comments.

And Freerentz seems ahem frugal

Sounds like there is little time to Coach when you are spending all your time picking out vacation homes, and boats, and everything. And there is no way that there is an effective rate of 50% taken for taxes.

Federal rate is 37% over ~$500k. Cali is 11.3% over $500k and 13.3% over $1M. That's 50%, but only on about 85% of your income. On say, $8M, the overall average rate about 48%, think that's a good estimate. But I am not adding in anything for FICA either.

That concludes the financial part of this message, back to regularly scheduled topics!

Wilner, LOL. Read through this guy's stuff on conference realignment, he is clueless.

He started the USC stuff by getting fooled by a fake Thamel Twitter handle, then said, "yeah but still."

This guy is so blinded by PAC homerism that he is miles out of reality. If Campbell were to turn down UW to him it would be that clearly UW decided they wanted the Fresno guy more, and would think of it along the lines of Napier turning down Florida to stay at Louisiana.

This one seems to have skipped the Campbell Kool-aid this morning and went straight for the Campbell-crack...

Put USC in UCLA’s location and I’m not sure they’d ever lose a recruit.
That raises the question of "Why does UCLA ever lose a recruit?"

Actually, why does UCLA ever lose a recruit? I guess I can understand them losing an occasional recruit to Arizona State, Colorado, Pepperdine, or Iowa State but why would they lose a recruit to anybody else?
