After doing business with Aldi in their corporate Illinois office, you walk away with a bare bones vibe. Spartan offices. The category buyer does it all as they function as the rep for three different departments of a 'normal' company.
Doing something right as they are one of the fastest growing grocers in the US.

This is a common belief that isnt true. They are owned and operated by separate entities. Although these entities were owned by brothers. Aldi in the u.s. and trader Joe's in europe are owned by Aldi Sud. And the trader Joe's in the u.s. are owned by Aldi Nord.

The reason the brothers split the business was because the had a disagreement as to whether or not to sell cigarettes. So they split the business. The albrecht family is one of the wealthiest in the world too.

I do think they likely work together to some extent as they carry many identical products under different labels, but they are not owned by the same parent company.

If I remember correctly Albertsons was the main grocery store in that German conglomerate. Albertsons used to be the #2 store in the world if i remember correctly. Failed miserably here in Des Moines and Iowa.

They have some of the same products but each store uses their own private label so the "brand" will be different.

Left is trader Joe's, right is aldi, exact same thing inside the jar.

If they were the exact same product and supplier, these products should have identical Kosher certifications, which they don't.

Yes, first store was in Germany and they expanded throughout the country. And eventually throughout europe.

In 1976 Aldi Sud expanded to the U.S. dropping the Sud from the name here. 3 years later Aldi Nord bought Trader Joe's in the U.S.

The first Aldi on U.S. soil was in Iowa.

A girl I worked with when I was a student at ISU was a regional manager or something like that for Aldi's last I knew. That was probably 20 years ago though. She was a hard worker so I imagine she fit right into their culture.

Albertsons has always been a U.S. company, founded in Boise, ID, and unrelated to any German company.

i heard that oddly enough in a radio report in Scotland. The one I remember was in Waterloo in the mid 90’s. Not sure if it was the first one though.

First was in Iowa City. Although lasted only a year.

Aldi and TJs don’t carry the same rebranded prepackaged foods as far as I’ve noticed. Spices are a terrible comparison for their general similarity. If you walked down the aisles of both stores the selections are quite different.

Yeah, I don't know that I have seen many crossover products between the two stores.

The new Aldi in Grimes is awesome. We don’t get all our groceries there but certain things are better tasting and about half the price of HyVee.

Little known fact, atleast to me it was, Trader Joe’s and Aldi have the same parent company. If you know someone who frequents Trader Joe’s the you might be able to learn about the honey also. They have some of the same products.

This isn't exactly true. The two brothers split and operated entirely separate companies after an argument in the 60's. They formed Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord. Aldi Sud operates the Aldi stores we know in the US. Aldi Nord bought Trader Joe's in '76. They aren't related anymore at all.

Their Artic Bars they have which are like Klondike bars are $2.50 for a box of 8. Way cheaper than Klondike. Wife swears their breaded frozen chicken breasts are just like what you would get at ChickFil A. Get the Brioche buns to!! Cheap wine also. 3 buck chuck!!

Aldi is great and ran like a grocery store should be ran, low overhead, quality products and they pay damn well. In our house Aldi gets 60% of our business with the other to wheatsfield and Hy vee.

Our office is somewhat close to the Aldi on NE 14th Street. Coronavirus is not in the top 10 of diseases I expect to be exposed to while standing in line to check out.

I saw Aldi has 2 new flavors of a spicy honey (spicy chili and sriracha) that just came out. I have seen some ads for Firebee Honey and it intrigued me but it is pricey ($23/bottle). I really don't want to try it for $23 and not like it. The aldis ones are like $4 a bottle. Has anyone tried either of them? If so, what did you put it on? Did you like it?

I've had the Aldi spicy chili honey. It has a tiny bit of heat, and a bit of a chili flavor. Pretty subtle, but still tasty.
