I saw Aldi has 2 new flavors of a spicy honey (spicy chili and sriracha) that just came out. I have seen some ads for Firebee Honey and it intrigued me but it is pricey ($23/bottle). I really don't want to try it for $23 and not like it. The aldis ones are like $4 a bottle. Has anyone tried either of them? If so, what did you put it on? Did you like it?

Aldi - a true hidden gem of American commerce

Little known fact, atleast to me it was, Trader Joe’s and Aldi have the same parent company. If you know someone who frequents Trader Joe’s the you might be able to learn about the honey also. They have some of the same products.

Do they have same products? I've never found that to be the case, but admittedly I haven't looked too hard. We love Trader Joe's in our house. Probably go once a month to stock up on the stuff we like. (If they sold nothing but Green Dragon sauce, I'd still go)

Ok I don’t know that first hand. I’m not a Trader Joe’s fan per se but I have been told they have similar products but maybe called different things.

it makes me laugh at how trendy Aldi has become. When I was a kid it was for the poorest of poor people.
Is it trendy? The one I frequent does not feel that way. Going there at odd hours and get in and get out.

The image has definitely improved. Trader Joe's is definitely more hipster, but Aldi is definitely more popular than it used to be. The Ames location is usually pretty busy. I know plenty of people who do the majority of their grocery shopping there, despite being able to afford to shop at more expensive places.

Honestly I have found better produce there then I can ever get at my local HyVee and its super cheap which is just a bonus.

I’ve been to TJs quite a few times and I don’t recall seeing any honey like that.

It's also been an old German company which may explain some of the nuances.

Aldi and Trader Joe's are almost the exact same thing. They both spun off the same original German supermarket company.

Have you tried making your own? I make my own chipotle/lime mayo and honey/bbq, so it's obviously not that hard. Just play around with ingredients/spices, get it to the flavor/consistency you like, and you can make it in bunches. Just a thought.

It's funny you say that, my wife loves Aldi and my first reaction was "I think we are doing well enough to not have to shop at Aldi, right?" I had that same perception in my mind.

I've gone a few times and it's pretty good stuff and you can save quite a bit.

A co-worker of mine who made considerably less money than I do was all over Aldi's so much so that she made me want to check it out. I had to ask where it was because even though I had driven past it several times in the past, I had no idea it was there.

From the moment I stepped out of the car and noticed their shopping cart retrieval system where you had to stick a quarter in a slot to release a cart, I was convinced this is not the place for me. I went in the store anyway, and it looked like the kind of place where it would not be unusual to find rats running down the aisles.

I looked around anyway, at all the off brands, brands I'd never heard of and bulk nonsense, and decided to put a few things in my basket anyway, then I turned the corner and headed down an aisle that led toward checkout and the door, and the line must have been 10 deep at the checkout counter where the one employee in the whole store was working. So I put my items back on the shelf, wheeled the cart out the door and retrieved my quarter and left.

This was a relatively small Aldi's. They're building a giant new Aldi's considerably closer to where I live and I may check it out if they ever complete it.

This is a common belief that isnt true. They are owned and operated by separate entities. Although these entities were owned by brothers. Aldi in the u.s. and trader Joe's in europe are owned by Aldi Sud. And the trader Joe's in the u.s. are owned by Aldi Nord.

The reason the brothers split the business was because the had a disagreement as to whether or not to sell cigarettes. So they split the business. The albrecht family is one of the wealthiest in the world too.

I do think they likely work together to some extent as they carry many identical products under different labels, but they are not owned by the same parent company.

That checker at aldi likely got through that line of 10 faster than a checker at walmart would get through a single customer.

and then go restock the shelves, sweep the floor and have checked out 15 more people in the meantime. They keep busy there and earn their paycheck, that is for sure.

They have some of the same products but each store uses their own private label so the "brand" will be different.

For exampleScreenshot_20200818-120908_Gallery.jpg

Left is trader Joe's, right is aldi, exact same thing inside the jar.
