ABC 5: Hoiberg - Done Deal

I sure hope some top players buy into the he knows how the NBA works and what it takes to get there..

We do have some top talent coming out of the state of Iowa the next couple of years, and Fred is a home grown, so hopefully he can secure the borders.

This hire is great. I find it absolutely comical how some of you have rebelled against this decision. I swear to god we could have hired Phil Jackson and people would have complained.

You put way too much emphasis on the fact he hasn't coached. The guy has done nothing but be around basketball since he was 5. It's not like he hasn't picked up on what good coaches do, and how good coaches run a program. In the end, you have assistants to help with X and O's, and you have assistants to help recruit. Your job, as a head coach, is to close recruits, manage players and be the face of the program. I see no reason Freddie wont be great at this.

It's clear to me that JP took the CPR road with this hire. Bring in a guy with passion, bring in a guy that knows the sport, and bring in a guy that loves Iowa State. That is a great combo in my eyes.

But for those of you that are now "done with Iowa State", c-ya later! I would love to see how you handle things that don't go your way in the real world...

I was lukewarm until I saw...

...the photo of Freddy, which reminded me of how great he was here and in the NBA!! Go Cyclones!

To do list:

Get yourself a great group of assistant coaches.

Reaffirm that the recruits and current players are committed, including the 2 that allegedly signed over the weekend.

Go after Colvin, Hamilton and/or Buckley. Get at least one of them to stick, ideally the big fella.

Guys- Coaching Isn't Rocket Science

Sure Fred hasn't coach a game, but how many practices has he been part of during his life? How many games has he played in? He knows basketball. Its not like he's going to be a deer in the headlights when the clock starts.

The key for Fred is who he hires as assistant coaches. This may change Grayer's role. With Fred's lack of college experience it may be tougher for Jeff to be an assistant coach. Maybe Jeff can be a basketball operations guy or a "graduate assistant" with other responsibilities within the athletic department.

I think keeping TJ is key to keeping the current roster and recruits. After that Nurse makes sense as a strong X's & O's guy to compliment any deficiencies Fred may have. I then think instead of Grayer, Fred goes after a guy with tons of recruiting connections.

IMO the following is a great staff:

Hoiberg (HC)
Nurse (X&O's Guy)
TJ (recruiter)
??? (recruiter)
Grayer (BB Operations)

The big question will be Grayer, since that position deals a lot with recruiting & NCAA rules it might not be a good fit.

For the first couple minutes I wasn't pleased at all. After sitting here reading comments for a few more minutes though I am PUMPED for bball! Welcome home Mayor! Go Cyclones!

My personal feeling is that this quick hire is being done to keep the current staff and players/recruits in place. I expect a staff of Hoiberg, Nurse, Grayer and Otzelberger. I don't know what to think right now but people wanted a Paul Rhoads hire and this is damn close to the same type. We have no clue how he will do so let us get behind Coach Hoiberg.

He has spent the last few years evaluating the top talent in college basketball. He know what it takes. I'm sorry it certainly isn't going to hurt our recruiting efforts to show them more than likely two NCAA All-Americans on staff, both of which played about 10 years in the NBA with a coach who has been an NBA exec. It certainly won't hurt!!

I mean Phil Jackson has never coached D1 basketball, he could never succeed! This is big time basketball, Phil started in the CBA for god's sake. :jimlad:

Who coaches the bigs with that line-up?

You know what? Not my first, second, third, or ninth choice... but I can see it. Very unorthodox, but it could definitely work if you give him a good Xs and Os guy on the side... maybe Nurse?

I think being the assistant GM of an NBA franchise gives him insight other candidates wouldn't have, even though he might not have the in game coaching insight a Gillespie might have. Kids know he not only knows how to get to the NBA as a player, but also knows what teams look for when drafting college players, so he can pass that knowledge to his recruits.

I am throwing my support 100% this hire regardless.

This is a high risk hire. But I absolutely love the potential upside.
Fred Hoiberg --- the face of ISU Men's Basketball.
