A Visiting Fan's Expectations for IC

Just be smart on where your at. Avoid triangle place off melrose as thats where all the fraternities tailgate and they will pick fights, and the majority of the obnoxious fans are off of melrose, expect them to be a-holes. Most hawkeyes are actually alright, its the majority of the dirt bag fan base that has never attended Iowa or have any relation to Iowa that suck. The real alumni of Iowa are okay, its just the dirt bag haven hawks that suck.

Avoiding dirtbag fans would seem to apply to any school..

I was in the student section at Kinnick in 2010. I had no problem. Though make sure you are respectful of the other fans.

It is probably better to be more subdued in your celebrations if you are surrounded by Iowa fans. They won't be happy if you are constantly standing up and cheering, as it will probably come off as mocking/taunting the fans around you. Don't let anything they say or do get to you. And if it does get to you, don't let it show. The fans that are heckling you, or throwing stuff at you just want to see you react. If the situation becomes bad (stuff is constantly thrown at you, or potentially dangerous stuff (full beer cans)) Don't hesitate to report it to the security. It is their job to deal with it. Not yours.

Most of us will treat you with respect and the ones who dont are ********. I always yell at people i see harassing other fans, although If ive had enough to drink I will send out a good natured "go hawks" at a visiting fan.

If it is just the two of you and you don't have other Cyclone fans you can meet up with, then treat Iowa City and especially everything within a 1 mile radius of Kinnick as if it is radioactive. Get in and out as fast as you can.

Kind of like hooking up with a hawkeye chick

You'rw in the endzone, not looking at the field from the side, but perpendicular to it.

Mostly a lurker here, but suddenly have (and will take advantage of) the opportunity to attend the game on Saturday in Iowa City. Now, I've been to nearly every home football game over the past 5 years, but this will be my first on the road...

1) I know the general courtesy and good-naturedness of Cyclone fans at JTS is not the norm throughout college football, and I'm not expecting a warm welcome outside or within Kinnick, but what level of hostility should I be prepared for? I'll be with my dad, who (while a huge Cyclone fan) is way too disconnected from the rest of the sport to properly grasp the contrast between fanbase attitudes. He may need a little pregame tune-up on how to properly distaste this particular clan.

2) We're sitting in section 135. Are these the visitors' seats or will we be immersed in black and gold? Research seems to say that the visiting section has moved around a bit in the past, so I just want to be sure.

Looking forward to some distressed and melting down Hawks both during and after the game! Go Cyclones!

It's not that bad.

It is a suburb of Chicago so you have to deal with that, but otherwise, not terrible.

They are a lot more rude and ruthless than ISU fans but still not like walking into a death trap.

A couple of clips of typical hok fan behavior.

The safest bet is to avoid contact with any of the hok fans in your general vicinity. If you can get in and out of that dump of a town without being sucker punched, having full beers thrown at you, spit on, etc... then you should consider investing in some Powerball tickets because your odds of hitting the jackpot are better then that of getting out of Iowa City unscathed.

Hawkeye fans are like apes at the zoo. One minute everything is fine and the next they are throwing poop at you.

The traffic is a ******* nightmare, too. Here's a picture of Iowa City on game day.

I would say the atmosphere in Iowa City on gameday is more like a zombie appocalypse. Angry mobs of drunken zombie fans yelling "Go Hoks!" and seeking to attack the fans of the visiting team. Extreme caution should be used by anyone entering the "infected" area which includes a 10 mile radius around Iowa City.

Sat in the student section in 2000 with several high school friends that were a mix of Iowa students and fans at the time. I knew there was going to be a lot of smack talk, but there were some dicey moments. For the most part the guys sitting around us were cool because they knew there was always the possibility of getting in a fight my 5 friends and me, but the girls were absolute a-holes.

Well they were absolute a-holes until one tried to throw a beer at me and hit my buddy (Iowa fan), who proceeded to turn around and let her know that we where going to find out how good of a fighter the two guys she was sitting with where. Things were pretty chill after that. Plus ISU had JJ Moses and Iowa didn't, so there was that.

My advice: Have a smile on your face for any and all smack talk, and make sure you're with a big group of your friends at all times (regardless if they're ISU or Iowa loyal). Otherwise I'll be a long day.

Thanks to all for the input leading up to the game! It's been discussed ad nauseam this week that Cyclone fans generally enjoyed their time in IC last weekend, and I count my group among them. Probably helped that many of them (dare I say, the reasonable Iowa fans?) knew that they didn't deserve to win that game in the first place...

or be 6'2" 230 like me, some hawk fan around me was heckling me till I stood up and turned around he was about 5'6" 130 he shut up real quick:rolleyes: size does matter

I have been to two ISU games at Kinnick. Both times I have surrounded by pleasant fans. A little good natured ribbing but nothing more.

This has been my experience also. I parked in the lot NW of the stadium the last two games. I have yet to hear a nasty word from Hok fans. No interaction at all in '10, this year parked next to a very pleasant group from C.R. The two men I conversed with were college grads (1 uofi, 1 uni--about the same thing), no evidence of them being recently evicted from a trailer park, no insults, no cussing, well, they did try to put a hok sweatshirt on me while I was snoozing--I was wondering if the niceness would wear thin after the game, but they were gone by the time we got back to the lot. I'm sure there are un-civil, moronic Hawkeye fans, but I have yet to have personal encounters with them. Except for the stumbling drunk we had to pull out of the Hilton parking lot ditch. We still debate if we should have left him there. The water wasn't THAT deep.
