Agree. Pete had so many memorable calls over the years. Fun to go back and listen. On that 10 man front call that Pete call is up there with my favorites. TOUCHDOWN TROY DAVIS!

It's probably a combination of the OL being better than what all the pundits/voter's said, and, Mr. Davis being a one of a kind RB in that place and time!
Tim Kohn and Patrick Augafa were the two OL standouts paving the way for Troy. For some reason I thought Bruns had been an OL for Troy but Bruns came to ISU the year after Troy left and Bruns got to block for Darren Davis.

Happy Anniversary! Was at the game and got married that evening. The crowd did not seem that small at the game.
The fact he never won the Heisman and isn't talked about more in terms of great college backs in a true injustice.
He did break a long one but it was called back for holding.I was at the game as well. If I recall correctly, Troy had somewhere around 38 carries, averaging just under 10 yards a carry. Plus, I don’t think he broke any extremely long runs on that game, making his total yardage even more impressive.
Sold tickets, not what was actually there.

Most runners are either power runners or striders. Rarely will you find a player that can do both. Troy was a power back; his steps were shorter and his feet moved faster due to that. The striders will have more top end speed due to taking up more yardage per step but they will also not have the quickness due to needing more space to get up to speed. Eric Dickerson was a pure strider. Bo had the unique ability to do both.Troy was a hard worker and as strong as an ox. That ISU team didn't pass a lot but when they did Troy could pick up the blitz as well as anyone and a linebacker was not going to run over Troy. He also had incredible balance so would be tacklers would hit him and he would just be knocked sideways and keep on running. One opposing defender compared tackling Troy to trying to tackle a cube.
What stood in Troy's way when he got to the NFL was his head and his top end speed. There is a lot to learn in an NFL camp in a short time and Troy needed more time but that isn't a luxury they can afford in the NFL. There is a lot more defensive speed in the NFL and Troy was quick but didn't have the top end speed of some backs so he would get caught from behind in the League - not that he had a lot of chance to get in the open field. He languished on three bad Saints teams getting spotty snaps under Ditka.
He was pretty successful in the CFL setting a franchise record and leading the league in rushing for Hamilton one year and winning the Grey Cup with Edmonton another year.
Yes. However, those two things are what he got docked for in the draft and what were his undoing in the NFL.Most runners are either power runners or striders. Watching highlights of Troy it is always amazing how he is often running in the open field. Often he largely goes untouched. How can that be when everyone knew he was getting the ball?
Agree. When I replied, I wasn't disagreeing with you, just more pointing something out. Wasn't meant to be directed at you or anything. The pros, you need a higher speed than he was. They mentioned he was a4.6 runner, I actually would say he appeared to be more in that 4.8 area. That is still decent speed for college and if you are in a downhill run, it is still going to be hard for guys to catch you. Many people back then did hand times and what I've been told is you add 0.25 roughly for hand times.Yes. However, those two things are what he got docked for in the draft and what were his undoing in the NFL.
That carpet that was there in the early and mid 90s was an advantage for ISU. It was so worn and so bad that a lot of good players would slip on and couldn't gain the speed they needed to.When defenses sell out to stop you at the line of scrimmage with 10 guys, all you need to do is get about 5-8 yards to find some real real estate to run on.
Hate to say it but that iteration of our stadium was rather depressing.
The crown to the field was crazy too. I practiced there once in high school. When you ran to the sidelines it was like running down hill. That carpet that was there in the early and mid 90s was an advantage for ISU. Byron Hanspard. YuckDidn't even win the Doak Walker award.
Lost to the Tech RB who (I didn't know this until just now) had a 0.00 GPA???
The crazy thing about that whole thing was Troy outshined him on the field and in stats but they claimed that the Doak Walker award was about what they do off the field and in the classroom as well and Hanspard was a minister and a better student.Byron Hanspard. Yuck
