Where they can be really unfair is on the greens. I don't want to see someone 4 putt and lose the tournament because they simply couldn't get the ball to stop anywhere near where the hole is cut. Other than that, bring on the pain.

Agreed. Long thick rough seems fair to create a real penalty for missing the fareway. With guys that can launch balls with low accuracy it’s all about how far you can get it and the approach shot is what’s important. With difficult rough, you have to think about laying off of the drive to keep it in the fareway. But if you’re trailing on Sunday, you have that option to try to go for it and be confident that the leaders will still lay up to avoid the disaster.
I recently learned there's a damn interstate running through the middle of the course. That's kind of wild.
I had kind of forgotten about this one. I knew that Tiger was doing amazing things at the time, but looking back at it with the perspective of time, it's even more impressive than I thought.

I'm a bit torn on the US open. I love the difficulty because it makes the best golfers in the world struggle a bit. I don't enjoy how unfair the greens are. It almost feels a bit over the top difficult. Having a putt narrowly miss the hole and then roll off the green completely is too much.
I have that happen all the time, of course it's because I hit the putt twice as hard as I should have

It's not crazy based on his recent form. I do think he'll be dialed in enough to make the cut. And if he doesn't, you won't hear the end of it about not being allowed to use the driver he wants.
Shouldn't have been above the hole. I can't wait to see who ******* if the USGA does what people think they are going to do. They are reportedly planning to place holes on twice the slope that the PGA Tour typically does and they want the greens around 15. Don't hit it above the hole.
I go back and forth on the rough. Sure, I want to see accuracy rewarded but I also like the idea of guys possibly hitting a great shot from the rough. There won't be much of the latter this week. I do think Oakmont has wide enough fairways that it won't turn into Winged Foot where no one can hit them so whoever hits it the farthest has a huge advantage. Oakmont is also different in that its greens naturally repel balls and WF has more edges that want to contain them.

Most put a true 18 in the 110-120 range, assuming they could even finish with the balls they had in their bag. Jason Day said 140. Tommy Fleetwood didn’t want to put a number on it and didn’t (kind of liked his approach to the question), but ultimately relented and said “a lot”. DeChambeau, in true DeChambeau fashion, said “mmmm, 100 (sly pause)…on the front 9” and walked off. You know Bryson said “damn, I’m a funny guy” to himself as he turned to walk away.

I think it depends on what kind of 18 they are. If it's an 18 that hits their driver 215, they won't be able to get to a lot of fairways. Then you're hacking out for who knows how long. Also, how many 18s play greens that are running 14 or 15? 3 putts would be a success for them. I think double par on every hole is realistic.
I think it was Justin Rose who said something about just bunting it 50 yards at a time, just to stay out of the rough. You’re right though…50 yards ain’t enough off the tee, so going to have to take some hacks.

i am closer to a 12 than an 18 but dont think i would break 120. thats 2 60s. if i had to play every shot, count lost balls as a stroke and distance penalty, putt out everything... JFC. i might not break 140. there would be a lot of 10s. i would love the par 3s.
I'm usually around 12 (now 17 due to a horrendous year with elbow issues) and at Kiawah Island I shot 110. Rough, rough day and 99 degrees and crazy humid didn't help, but I feel like I'd maybe break 100 on a good day. Just so many shots where you have to be on target or it's a disaster.
