***2025-26 CFB Coaching Carousel***

The dumbest and most ridciculous things are the buyouts. In the Big 10 alone, the buyouts total more than $300 million. In the past 20 years, Nebraska has paid out more than $50 million in buyouts of coaches and athletic directors. What a waste of money.
So wild...I think KU still paying off coaches.

It really will be interesting in this cycle to see the buyouts and such with the revenue sharing and other financial concerns in college sports.

I think the desirability of the PSU job comes down to NIL. PSU is a traditional blue bloods and has a fanbase with blue blood expectations. If they don't have top tier blue bloods level NIL money to go along with it, then that is a coaching job setup for failure. Seems like that scenario is playing out at Bama.

NIL changes the equation on some of these jobs now. It isn't just about brand, history, and facilities now.

I agree with that. But these dumbass AD's agree to them and then don't have the patience to put up with a few bad games.

Lane to me is a more successful Tom Herman.
Lane can be a doosh but can coach, unlike MENSA.

I havent listened to Travis Justice in a long time but he had a kid at Ole Miss, and so he followed them, and I think he said Mississippi has some funky laws with coaching salaries/contracts that does make it tough to keep a successful one there.
Ole Miss will always be a wannabe SEC power. They just don't have the resources to be what they aspire to be year after year. Its a better job than Mississippi State and Vandy but that's it. Its probably a push if you want to compare them to Mizzou. They have certainly had more success historically than South Carolina but the ceiling at Carolina is probably higher. Arkansas has more $$$.

KU actually paid off those coaches years ago but it was a lot of wasted money.

Is there precedent for a coach going from top 5 and on the doorstep of a NC berth, then getting canned midway through the next season?

Probably not but I once saw a coach get a coin made for him that went on to win 5 games in two seasons.

There are two jobs I think Matt Campbell would take — Penn State and Ohio State, with Ohio State being the clear number one. PSU is paying 49 million to buy Franklin out. They have money.

Pure ignorant speculation on my part, but IF the environment where he raises his family is a top-line concern then Penn State may be on a shortlist of perfect destinations for Coach Campbell.
Agreed. I'm not sure people realize how desolate State College is. You are nowhere near Philly, Pittsburgh, or even the medium sized cities there. Is there a bigger job anywhere that's in a more rural area than there? It does seem like a nice quiet place people would want to raise a family.

I don't know. I could honestly see him going to a good job that isn't going to can him the first time he has a down year. I almost think he'd leave for a place like Wisconsin or even Michigan State before he went to the other 2.

But even those jobs would fire a coach if they don’t have success. You need to show some improvement or success early to get in the good graces of the fan base. Then you’ll be set in those places. A job like tOSU or PSU will make you rich, but you’ll never be happy because the fanbase won’t ever be satisfied no matter how much success you have

I’d argue that athletic directors are up there with the worst negotiators in the history of the world. And yet they don’t get fired for making these ridiculous contracts.
Most ADs are out of there a couple years after they approve the contract.

No kidding! I've been there once. Good news = They have an airport. I flew in on a Friday Night on a Northwest puddle jumper (back in the day). As we were landing, the lady next to me asked why I was coming to SC, PA. I said: "For the game tomorrow." She just laughed and said: "Yep, why else would anybody come here?" :)
