2019 Personal Goals

Thought you guys were talking bench and squats for 1000lbs. In HS we had 800 for those two and was impressed with anyone close to that for bench/squats.

My resolution for the new year was to be nice to Iowa fan. It's January 2, and I've already broken that. Oh well, hoks suck!

We have a baby boy that's roughly the same age as your's and I have no idea how you expect to get these things done. I feel like I am spending all day with him and spend no time on things like yard work, vacation, friends or fitness. Full time job + crawling baby = no free time.

Ours is working on crawling......got the backward scooch down! Some of it I'm basing on what we've had time for in the past few months and are already being done. We just hosted friends both the 30th and 31st, plus a couple other times when he was younger. We've attended a couple parties and brought his pack n play along......that's way more work and stress. I feel having people over 1 evening or afternoon a month is pretty doable. Fitness I'm already doing 5x a week (including gym) which is a lot. I'm dropping to 4x next week. I have to get creative, but it's important to me so I make it work. Some of the other goals are about doing things to make more time so that's a priority for me. He came out with me to the garden in his carrier a bit last summer/fall so I think this summer would be easier.......maybe. Or we'll do like we did a lot of weekends and we trade off. DH goes out to mow, then we swap and I go out to do garden stuff.

We'll see. I know that things toward the bottom of that list (minus the finance + work stuff) are less likely to happen. I'm still spending about 45 minutes or so on the internet after he goes to bed that I could put toward those things. Or I could just go to bed!

I started lifting in the fall and have been making steady progress. I like powerlifting and strongman so I train to lift max weight rather than for muscle growth. My goals are 300+ bench, 550 squat and 450 deadlift before the end of the year. Right now my calculated maxes are 260 bench, 465 squat and 380 deadlift. I'm basically almost back to where I was in high school finally, but that was 20 years ago now.

Your greatest increases should come in squats and then deadlifts. Don't skip leg day and in a couple months you should probably double those numbers.

Use to lift frequently in college. I screwed myself by not doing legs so I'm still catching up in those regards. Come to find out I thoroughly enjoy deadlifting.

When I was in HS, the upper classmen were enthralled with bench press. Thought it was the end all be all of lifting. So they would tie up the bench, usually by sitting there and yapping, for the whole open time. So I focused on squats, which they never touched, and curls. My bench was therefore off compared to most, but I had great balance and leg drive because of it. So I even was a heavy leg guy in college and afterwards.

That was me. I still love it, but in my delayed personal growth I've finally realized that squat and deadlift are king because they are the greatest testosterone boosting lifts. Lifting at 19 was about "getting the girls". At 24 its now about finding a way to challenge myself each day outside of work.

This seems timely...

Thought of another one last night while walking the dog. Taking a walk or bike ride every day seems fairly attainable.

I just read "Finish" by Jon Acuff which was a great one to read, as well. The premise of the book is that our tendency toward perfectionism keeps us from achieving many of our goals.
I haven't read a book for leisure in so long it makes me sad. Though I usually prefer fiction and have some favorite authors, occasionally I do need to read something like this that seems to demand my attention. Hopefully the demand carries through until I actually get the book read.

Acuff is a very easy read. He’s an amateur stand up comedian when he’s not doing his speaking gigs. He puts in a fair amount of humor into each chapter. But he’s got kind of a goofy sense of humor which some like and some don’t.
