What Hinkie is trying to do is sort of similar to what Morey did with the Rockets a few years back - pile up assets and wait for the opportunity to land a franchise guy either through trade or free agency. The key difference IMO is that while Morey was biding his time, Houston stayed somewhat competitive. Philly has been unabashedly awful the last few years and more sideshow than actual franchise. And maybe I'm wrong, but the stink of that losing culture won't wash away any time soon. Young players are developing bad habits, and it's going to take a monster effort to turn it around once Hinkie decides it's time to start trying to compete.

Yeah they've taken it too far to me like if you were a free agent it would make no sense to sign with Philly unless they're offering you more money than anyone else. I don't think players respect or understand what he's doing they're more of a laughing stock than anything, which is the worst situation possible because even if you manage to find a star who is on the trading block they're not going to want to resign. Pretty much takes the Harden type deal off the table

The original lottery was just one envelope per team. Equal odds for all spots, or maybe not quite equal if you believe in any bent corner or frozen envelope conspiracies.

I'm already assuming in my mind that the Wolves get the 4th pick so I won't be disappointed. Towns, Okafor, or Russell would have been nice... Instead we're getting Mudiay and trying to trade Rubio, or Porzingas who I just assume is Darko. I guess all of this really doesn't matter because the Wolves cannot draft anyways, setting aside this past year this is what Wolves fans have dealt with:

(These guys might actually turn out alright)

2012: No 1st, Robbie Hummel in 2nd round

2011: 1(2) D. Williams

Don't forget how miserable historically the wolves are in the lottery. Despite almost always in line for great odds to one of the top picks they generally end up lower than their record indicates they should be picking. It is almost laughable how unlucky they are in the lottery.

Morey's plan looked like it was going nowhere, and Houston was stuck around 40-45 wins every year, until they got lucky with the Harden trade. The Sixers had been stuck in a somewhat similar place, barely sneaking into the playoffs. There's a lot of luck involved in either process. You can wait around, pick at the back of the lottery each year, while trying to find that franchise player available through a trade, or you can be terrible for a few years and try to find him through the lottery. You might get lucky and win the lottery when there's a Duncan or LeBron type available and you're set for the next decade plus, or you win it in a year Anthony Bennett is the first pick and you're right back where you started.

You need total organizational buy in to go the route the Sixers have went, from ownership down to coaching and they seem to have it. They've also been very transparent with their fans and I think a large portion of their fanbase has bought in. Of course, being terrible is the easy part. When you've sold your fans on "hey we're going to really suck for a few years but that's because we're trying to be great, not just good", you really have to deliver some results. Building a 55 win team that caps out in the conference semis each year isn't going to satisfy the fan base.

One thing I thought the Sixers would be better at is finding legitimate rotation guys. When you've got tons of playing time to offer, you should be taking lots of shots on some risky, high upside guys, running through a lot of D-League guys. Try to turn them into assets to flip. They've really only found Robert Covington and maybe KJ McDaniels, and they had no leverage on trading McDaniels because they tried to screw him on his rookie deal that everybody knew he was walking at the end of the year.

I called it earlier, they need to take Cauley-Stein, build around a core of him, Gordon, Payton and Oladipo. Hire Thibs and play the type of 75-70 games that Thibs will love.

Cauley-Stein is the most overrated player in the draft. He is athletic for a guy that tall but is not great at anything and is horrible on the offensive end.
