Yeah I get that, but you're talking about what, like just over $1M difference in salary between the number one and three pick?

Maybe five years, ago, I'd agree with you. But what top shelf free agent would sign on to play second fiddle to Kobe while he jacks up 25-30 shots a game until his body breaks down again?

I mean the Celtics won what like 40 games without any above average players because of their coach.

The Lakers could have easily improved their roster by signing mid-level players like Channing Frye, Boris Diaw, etc with the money they had but instead decided to go only for star players. When they didn't get any of those guys they decided to just save the cap room rather than marginally improving the team, but not really going anywhere, and hope they can land someone in the future. Essentially giving up on improving the team for the 2014-15 season in hopes of getting really good down the road. That's pretty much the definition of tanking

Yeah but that can actually make a pretty big difference. Being able to offer another player $14 million instead of $12 is a big deal. I get what you're saying my point was just that really for them getting the number 1 pick doesn't do them much good since they need guards anyways and the two C's are at the top for every other team other than maybe Sacramento

What year do you think this is? Kobe has been horrible on defense the last few years, he chases steals like crazy, he gets caught ball watching all the time. I'm sure being another year older and coming back from another major injury will definitely improve his defense though.

I want to see how far Sam Hinkie is going to take this. I want him to take Towns or Okafor and not even try to act like he's building a team, just acquiring the best assets that he can and not worrying about how they fit.

Lol I'm not a fan of building through the draft I think it takes too much luck to actually pull off, so personally I think what he's doing is stupid. But who knows. OKC managed to do it I guess.

I don't see them passing on Russell or Mudiay anyways tho they need a guard too badly and honestly I think Russell is the best player in the draft

I think that's how they used to do it and they switched to this system because the worst team got a really lousy pick several years in a row. With this system the worst team record wise can do no worse than the 4th pick. That is if I understand it correctly.

The original lottery was just one envelope per team. Equal odds for all spots, or maybe not quite equal if you believe in any bent corner or frozen envelope conspiracies.

Good job outta the TWolves losing their last 12 to ensure the best chances in the lottery. It is still crazy even then they have better odds at the #4 pick then they do at the #1 pick.

What Hinkie is trying to do is sort of similar to what Morey did with the Rockets a few years back - pile up assets and wait for the opportunity to land a franchise guy either through trade or free agency. The key difference IMO is that while Morey was biding his time, Houston stayed somewhat competitive. Philly has been unabashedly awful the last few years and more sideshow than actual franchise. And maybe I'm wrong, but the stink of that losing culture won't wash away any time soon. Young players are developing bad habits, and it's going to take a monster effort to turn it around once Hinkie decides it's time to start trying to compete.
