2/22-24 Winter Weather Thread

What are some good things to prep with rain on the way? The snow isn't going to let the water flow where it should, so I'm a little concerned about that. I'm anticipating water will pool up rather quickly. Should I knock down the snow/ice on the gutters of the house?

My hope is that the above freezing temps take care of the icicles on and ice on the gutters in the next two days.

We had 2 last March and April

In Des Moines?! I'm talking like a foot of snow can't go anywhere type blizzard. I work in Clear Lake as well and I know they got railed many times last year. I can't recall one in the metro for about 5 years.

I remember southern IA getting nailed as I wanted to drive down to do some cycling.

So is what your all saying is pack extra beer for this weekend as we will be snowed in des Moines. Aau state is going to be a blast

I'm fine with these things happening on a weekend. So long as I'm stocked with beer and the television is working I will survive.

I don't recall for sure, but by the definition of a blizzard (high winds and blowing snow, not necessarily heavy snowfall), we may have had some blizzard warnings the last few years in the Des Moines area.

But the last blizzard I remember that brought heavy snow with it was this one:

Even the interstate didn't get back to normal for a couple days afterward. There was another real bad one in December of 2009. Those are the last two "shutdown" blizzards I remember in the Des Moines area.

I pissed off some co-workers with that one. I was working at the DSM Airport at the time and we knew it was coming. My wife and I lived in Ames though and it was my "Friday" so I didn't really want to get stuck in a DSM hotel room. It started to snow in the middle of our busy time so I finished fueling my planes as quickly as I could and told them I was heading home before they called for de-ice. It took me about an hour or so to get to our apartment in Ames. I pulled up LiveATC when I got there and the planes were taxing back in after failing to get out and the flights were cancelled.

Do you add stabilizer? I’m reluctant to let it sit for winter months without

The only issue I've ever had with something not starting up is the one year I actually used stabilizer. I have never had an issue with not using it before. Occasionally, I'll run it dry but most of the time I won't. The last time I ran the snowblower dry it took like 4 or 5 hours of listening to it run.

Did I read somewhere where this storm is close to being considered "Bombogenesis"?

Possibly. NOAA defines that as "Bombogenesis is a popular term that describes a midlatitude cyclone that rapidly intensifies."

Basically the low pressure system (Cyclone) "bombs" out as the pressure rapidly drops.

Load up on plenty of ice melt for if/when the temps drop back below freezing after rain. Dig out any downspout openings covered with snow right now so the water has somewhere to go. Pray for spring or death's sweet release. That's all I've got; anyone else?

Looks like they have backed off totals in north central Iowa? Please keep trending in that direction. Not sure I can deal with a foot of snow before 50-60 mph winds

The only thing that I would add is that if you live on the end of a cul-de-sac or low area that floods it might be a good idea to go check storm drains near your property to be sure they are clear from snowpack or ice so the rainwater in the streets has somewhere to go.
