Owen Freeman to Clones?

I don't pay attention enough to the NIL funds to know how much we can spend, but it seems to me the thing to spend top $ on would be a big-time veteran PG. Teams that have veterans, and particularly veteran backcourts make deep NCAA runs. As long as you have some sort of a rim protector/rebounder you can do a lot with 3 and even 4 gaurds on the floor at once.

Multiple pg capable guards is ideal, right? When we’re at our best, we had the mark of a team with two veteran guards with pg skills on the floor at the same time, controlling the game

I’d guess they’re looking for at least an experienced combo guard to help replace Gilbert.

Lipsey, Heise, and a transfer combo would be an experienced backcourt. Add in Toure and Batemon, plus Milan at the 3.

Unless TJ thinks he can teach him to rebound, play defense, and get in shape. He doesn’t fit what TJ wants out of players
I think it's definitely possible and you put his skill with the presidents we would be great inside on offense

Sure. I guess the bottom tier of the P5 needs guys, and the scholly limit goes up next year too.

More than just bottom P5, but if they’re looking for starter minutes, maybe only 2 or 3 end up at a good P5.

Sandfort with two years left would get a lot of interest from mid-level P5s imo.

Traore and Dembele will be relatively cheap, but likely better ceiling/floor ratios than freshmen. A lot of good P5s would be interested in having them in the rotation imo

I would not even want this "Black Hole" around the Iowa State Cyclone Men's Baskeyball team. He is a "Me first- all I care about is a big bag player." It appears Owen does not understand what a TEAM is.
It's not 2005 anymore. This way of thinking just no longer works.
Shoot, the vast majority of guys who get playing time for the Cyclones are guys who could be accused of being "Me first" by their previous schools. They all took a big bag, at least compared to what they were getting at their previous schools. Where would we be if we held to your principles and stayed away?

This is how the game is played today. And if you want your favorite school to avoid these "Black Holes" then get used to hanging out in the bottom half of the league. It's literally that simple.

Regarding Dix or Freeman going to Creighton - I wonder what happens if Greg McDermott takes the Indiana job - Keith Murphy had a tweet about him being the odds on favorite there (and that TJ wasn't interested)

Maybe Creighton hires Mad Fran!
Creighton is a better job than Indiana. Why would McDermott leave?

Creighton has an NBA arena. Their entertainment district surrounding that arena is unmatched. Extremely wealthy alumni base who are ridiculously passionate about their basketball program. No football team taking NIL funds.

I genuinely think Creighton could win a national title in the next 5 years. Not so sure I could say the same about Indiana right now.

I don't disagree at all that Creighton is a better job than IU - and certainly a better fit for Greg.

the odds came from BetOnline:

Name the players we have that are seeking 2 mil and quit on their team mid season.

You live in Omaha, I assume.

IU has the deepest of pockets. Cook alone has no issue adding $10+ million to the budget for the right hire. That’s not even a month of interest.

Assembly Hall is odd, but also something cherished by a huge, passionate fan base. They don’t need an entertainment district to entice fans, and I doubt that’s something coaching candidates care about

Did he really just not play or was he injured? And if he wasn't playing why didn't he just leave the program?
He had surgery, didn’t he? I’m assuming he needed to stick around for Iowa to pay for his post op care on his hand.

Probably also to maintain his academic eligibility.

Fine, go ahead and argue semantics. Maybe if you plug your ears and close your eyes tight enough, you can pretend it's 20 years ago, when stuff like this mattered. To be clear, you don't have to like it, but don't be naive and think that it works any other way in this world. It doesn't.

When your program doesn’t have the money to compete at the level desired, it’s a nice coping mechanism to bifurcate players into greedy toxic guys and quality team guys.

I'm one that thinks teams having 3-4 guards on the court at once makes you a nightmare to guard. You can do things defensively that force longer shots that lead to longer rebounds gaurds can get. It kind of neutralizes your teams lack of height Even Larry Eustachy knew this 25 years ago. College basketball especially is a guards game. And teams that are good have veteran guards. Now having said that you have to have gaurds that can 1. Penetrate and 2. Guards guys 15 ft. and beyond that are often a few inches taller. We need a healthy "go to" scorer at guard for next year that can get to the rim when he wants. He doesnt need to average 20ppg but a guy that when he needs to, can somewhat take a game over. If nothing else he can go to the rim and draw fouls. See Deandre Kane

I am talking about Owen Freeman's lack of character- are you vouching for his character and you want guys that quit on their team mid-season? It is not about semantics or me "plugging my ears and closing my eyes tight." You have succeeded in making me belly laugh, so thanks for that.

As a Cyclone with formative years overlapping with that team, I’m biased towards that as well

Small ball is also money ball imo.

There are so many more skilled basketball players at guard than forward/center, and the frontcourt ultimately needs the backcourt to get them the ball.

Spend most of our limited funds on perimeter skills, and get cheaper bigs that are good at defense and rebounding

It's not just us. It's everyone. Even the NBA has went to smaller and quicker lineups. It's just harder in the NBA to find gaurds than can defend taller players. If your gaurds can't defend and can't rebounds you won't win though. If you have 4 guys that can play the wing and get to the rim, it's likely you'll have 4 guys on the floor getting to the line that shoot ft's 80% or better too.

Of course. With a salary cap and actual contracts, it makes even more sense.

With the 3 point line and more “smaller” players being able to advance the ball than “tall” players, the game is biased towards valuing what is typically the guard role. Add in there are far more players of that size/“position”, basic economics suggest in very few situations should you overspend money or minutes on bigs

I don't know Owen Freeman, but I will vouch for the idea that seeking a bigger paycheck does not equal bad character. The vast majority of us have left jobs for better pay, sometimes multiple times.

As far as quitting goes, that's your opinion. All we know is that he had surgery that caused him to miss the rest of the season. It's highly unlikely that a player would have surgery that they didn't ultimately need, so the "quitting on his team" part comes down to the timing. Could he have played through it? Was the pain more than he wanted to deal with? Was he worried about aggravating it? We don't know any of that. And none of the potential answers to those questions automatically make him a "bad character" guy.

But even if he just wanted to shut it down to make sure that he was fully healed by the time transfer season rolled around, that's a business decision in his part, a decision that is replicated in the rest of the world all of the time without anybody questioning someone's character because of it. Only through the antiquated lens of College Athletics does that come into play.

Exactly. You can't look at basketball as 5 positions anymore. It's wings and post players. You do have to have post guys that can defend and rebound though. You need true combo guards too(and I mean quick ball handlers) because if your wings can't break people down and dribble drive you're ****** offensively too. Having a guy like Milan that is 6-9 or so that can play the perimeter offensively, and defend the 4 maybe even the 5 of the other team is a massive advantage for us. EVERYONE would play "smallball" if they could still defend. It's way easier to score with skilled players.
