2025 MBB Coaching Carousel

Saw a TikTok with Pitino and he was asked about the Indiana opening and flat out said publicly that if he were Indiana there would be only one coach on the list they should hire: Chris Beard

Kind of looks like a Nick Nurse resume.

Following BYU model. Think you will find more teams look to this to fill positions.

You gotta manage a bunch of paid athletes and try to deal with egos

Pop himself said the hard part of being a coach in the NBA isn't the X's and O's.

It's managing the egos in the locker room. Playing time, fame, money, girls, everything, etc.

The Last Dance shows Phil at work doing that task under the most difficult of circumstances.

And because they’re paid, not having built connections from years/decades of recruiting in college doesn’t matter

Remember when fans would wonder “but can he recruit (at this level)”?

That was always largely flawed, but now it’s basically antiquated

The GM skills of the HC were always the key in recruiting, see Hoiberg’s success here, but now it’s basically the job.

Good GM skills and lockeroom culture are difficult to outsource to assistants, and generally must come from the HC.
