I would like to know details of LB injuries. There were so many. Upper body or lower body? Occurring in practices, scrimmages, or games? Occurring in defense or in special teams? If you watch old ISU film from the 90's - there were alot bigger shoulder pads used on LBs and more knee braces on linemen. Are game pads the same as practice pads? How many practices are actually full-contact? Where are surgeries performed? Does conditioning or technique reduce injury occurrences?

I didn’t really feel like we got a whole lot from Snyder this year. Very Latrell Bankston-like where expectations were higher than the actual results

Yeah, but what about next year after a year of experience at this level, conditioning, strength training, nutrition, and improving?

Anyway, his decision, he made his judgment. Wish him the best, I do.

Shoulder pads are much smaller.

Sure. But, maybe, coincidence? If something happens to one group rather than all groups, or several groups, I don't know.

Life. Strange stuff happens. Analyze the best we can, but sometimes **** happens. Myself, I hate jumping to conclusions.

Feel like addressing the 3-3-5 defense is the biggest X's & O's challenge for Campbell and the defensive coaching staff this offseason. It's a defense that has been a cornerstone of ISU's success as a team during Campbell's time at ISU. Prolonged success that ISU hasn't enjoyed since the Bruce/Majors era. One doesn't have to look further than Campbell's conference win %.

But the question they need to address:
  1. Have opposing OC's found weaknesses in the 3-3-5? It can't be sugarcoated, the Cyclone defense was atrocious against the run in 2024. We had RB's and QB's consistently gain big yards getting outside the tackles. Not being able to stop the run is typically a charateristic of a 4 win team, not a 10 win team.
  2. With realignment and 8 new teams, are Big 12 offenses different in their approach? I feel the days of the Mike Leach/Lincoln Riley pass happy offenses are a thing of the past. Most Big12 teams take a balanced approach. If anything there is a lean toward the run game, with a bigger emphasis on QB runs.
  3. How does ISU get pressure on opposing QBs. Average QB's make mistakes, but give solid QB's time and they won't make mistakes. Plus if they have time, they have time to make big plays.
I doubt ISU moves on from a 3-3-5. If there was a year to do it, it was this past season with players like Singleton, Orange, Hawk, Onyedim, Petersen and Snyder. Maybe there's 8-10 talented young D-lineman our roster, but I doubt it.

But could Heacock morph the 3-3-5 to be more stout against wide runs and get QB pressure?
I think it’s more about the players than our scheme.

There's nothing wrong with the 12 personnel or 3-3-5. And to some degree, saying what the NFL does or this college does or whatever is irrelevant... cause the NFL can put too-toos on a farting hippo with a sun visor and it would work cause that's who they are working with.

The 3-3-5 and 12 personnel makes us a little unique and gives us an advantage. Its very rarely the scheme as to why you lose a game.

1) You're not prepared
2) You're not good enough / the other team is just better
3) Lots of turnovers / mental errors, either by staff, players or both
4) Injuries
5) Just a bad matchup

There are 99.9 million ways to skin a pig on offense and defense. Almost of all of them work or have worked somewhere or they wouldn't have become a thing.

The first two drives where we featured Hansen, threw to Burkle, etc - we looked great. So its not the scheme.
Defensively, we had really good games at times, limited K State, pretty decent team. So its not the scheme per say.

I was originally wondering if Purchase had another year. But he's a post Covid kid and played as a true freshman in 2021 so he is done.

The only guy I'm not sure is Barrett. Assuming 2020 & 2021 count as his covid then redshirt years. So he should be able to play 2025 if he wants.
Purchase walked. I don't remember Barrett as part of senior night though.

Oh, by the gods, thank you for not saying ways to skin a cat. My best buddies are my two feline dudes.

But, then, pigs, they're considered really smart animals, too. I gotta go vegetarian.

Snyder was the first loss that bummed me. But then again, he disappeared partway thriugh the season. Did he get hurt or just lose PT

Our defense was really good this year, 4th best in PPG given up. And pointing to the scoreboard works for 2024, but we're talking 2025.

You know coaches. And understand going into the offseason they have to be greatly concerned about:
  1. ISU's eleven P4 opponents rushed for 190 YPG. Only ahead of OSU among Big12 teams.
  2. Our defense was 9th best in Big12, allowing 5.9 yards per play.
  3. Last in sacks with 7. The leader CU had 33 and the median was 16.
The easy answer was injuries at LB. But I doubt the coaches are going to put ALL their eggs in that basket. It's all about evolving and adapting or getting overcome.
It really was due to LB play. There were just too many guys that had to play major reps that just didn't have enough experience or were so deep down the chart that they were physically overwhelmed.

One common theme on most of the big yardage runs against us was LB's way out of position or committing way too early and getting sucked in.

The silver lining IMO is a lot of young guys got reps at LB, and I think that'll pay off next season. We don't all agree on this, but I personally think we have a lot of young talent in the LB room (Brezina, Goodwin, Ebel to name a few). And even Bacon can be considered somewhat young.
