Football Attendance Against Cincinnati

I can't stand night games. When they substituted modern lights for the organic filamented incandescents it just ruined it for me.

I actually have never understood this argument. Maybe it’s just because I’m almost exclusively an ISU fan rather than a college football fan but beyond a few players I don’t know hardly anything about our opponents. I’m not going to watch any opposing teams players even in the slightest. I’m showing up to watch our team.

This was a decent Big 12 opponent - what’s there to be put off by?
There's a reason our home games against Texas were virtually always well above the average attendance for their respective years. Sure, part of it is they bring a decent number of fans with them, but a larger factor is that any fanbase wants to see exciting games against exciting opponents.

In the case of Cincy, I bet there's a surprisingly large percentage of the people who attend our games who don't realize they're a conference opponent (not a huge percent, mind you... like 2-3%), but there's undeniably a large chunk that still think of them as a G5 quality opponent.

It's not that complicated. We have a cap on the number of ISU fans who are willing to go to a game. It takes higher stakes, a good game time, and comfortable weather for us to sell out a game that doesn't involve Iowa or UNI.
Agree. Open dates in September and night games in November doesn’t help attendance,

On the field maybe, but not in perception.
OU, UT, aTm would have added a lot to the perception that the league was as strong as ever. Colorado would still be there, so they are the new up and comer to the league, then add ISU, KSU and Mizzu and the league would be fine perception wise. You have to remember that the SEC now is helped with having three of those old B12 teams that we lost.

I believe the number one reason for low attendance is -a 7:00 start time and being the third night game this season. As an older person from NW Iowa, I’m not going to make a third, very late night of driving. There is a limit I’m willing to spend on entertainment and the additional cost of staying overnight in Ames or somewhere close is just not worth it.
Looking to the network of games next season in the B12 going to TNT and TBS-filling in NBA game times, I’d guess there may be three or more night games. I wonder how the fan base will respond??

I think it stems from a couple things. First, a lot of people felt like they wasted their time and money to go to KC last weekend to watch what was frankly a pathetic effort. I think a lot of people weren’t going to spend money to be let down again. Second, expectations changed. Right or wrong, back to back losses against “inferior” opponents, lost a lot of people. Throw in Cincinnati isn’t really an exciting opponent and people didn’t really want to go. To be honest, I didn’t really want to drive up from KC for the game Saturday but still did despite not having any excitement for the game.

If people are coming up with excuses to not see a modern ISU Matt Campbell team that was 7-2 going into the game with a shot at a Big XII Champ game still out there. Idk what to say.

Attendance was absolutely disappointing. Weather ended up not being bad at all. Wind died down big time an hour or two before kickoff.

If we're 9-2 going into Farmageddon on 11/30 I really hope people show up. I know most farmers are done or close to wrapping up too. I know the ag folk won't be afraid of 50 degree (or even 20 degree) weather like last Sat.

Loyal Sons, Forever True.

Does the truth hurt? It definitely makes a difference. People wanted to see Texas, OU, Nebraska, etc come to town. Not near as many care about seeing crappy G5 teams like UCF and Cincinnati.
I was speaking generally. We have a very loud faction of fans on twitter who break down into hysterics at the smallest inconveniences. A lot of them think they should be the offensive coordinator, athletic director, and marketing director.

I'd go with:
  1. TV deals that allow for late window selections. Tougher to plan ahead for fans.
  2. Night game in November.
  3. Cincinnati (non-traditional Big12 opponent)
  4. Coming off 2 straight losses. For casual fan the CFP or Big12 CG story line was over.

I fear this will be the norm across the board in college football...once a team is out of contention for their CCG, many fanbases will feel their season is over.

So they aren't really ISU fans then if they want to see the opponent instead of ISU.
That’s like saying you aren’t a fan if you didn’t want to drive to Ames and pay $20 to see the cyclones play against Mississippi Valley State. People are obviously going to be more amped up to fill the bigger games, like Marquette in just 3 week.

Not everyone can make every game. Speaking from personal experience, who we play makes a huge difference in which game(s) we elect to go to each year. There's a reason fewer people showed up to see us play Arkansas State than Baylor.
