They had 11 freshman on that first team, barely any played, other than Josh Lenz (Chizik recruit) and they made a bowl. Knott and Klein were great, but they didn’t play that first year. They used pretty much exclusively Chizik (some McCarney) players and recruits the first year.

Once Rhoads had to rely exclusively on his own guys, he completely went in the tank.

The mark of a good coach is how well you can do with your own recruits. I’d say Campbell is passing that test.

Mark of a good coach is winning with all recruits. Winning despite lacking talent. Campbell passes all tests. Excellent coach.

Hindsight is 20-20. Harbaugh had never head coached in the FBS at that point (or at a school that offered scholarships)and Kelly had 1 decent year at a MAC school.

Chizik had zero head coaching experience. Should have taken Kelly.

Chizik was never a home run. Hated it then, hated it now. Dude coached at elite universities with elite talent and had success. Here's a cookie.

Whenever he didn't have elite talent, his teams were god awful.

Well, at Iowa State, typically, we're not going to be able to just out talent people on too many Saturday's.

So guys like Campbell, Cignetti, even a Golesh who I think is a pretty decent coach and having reasonable but not outstanding success at USF - are better fits. Those types. Developers and builders, not I do great with talent but suck without it

Eventually you have to move up from development and building. The goal
Is to win championships. I think CMC would agree with that. I hope every coach in any sport agrees with that. People just want us to be Iowa and that doesn’t excite me at all.

Stormin might be a bot.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills reading these responses. There is a significant inability onto look at this from a point of view of being in 2006.

I don’t disagree Kelly or Harbaugh may have worked out better, but with the information we had at the time, not using hindsight, the fact Iowa State landed Chizik was nothing short of astounding and was widely lauded as a huge get at the time.

I want to let you in on a little secret that not a lot of people know, Iowa State may never win a national championship, and you might just have to be ok with that.

Campbell is our best shot. Stupid to even talk of replacing him. The window for relevancy is now. Before the next TV contract. We are in the conversations of the CFP playoffs and Big 12 CCG and still have a realistic shot if we quit making mistakes. And we are doing it while dealing with some decimating injuries. Our starting LB lineup is gone. Tight ends. Secondary. Playing youngsters. If we fail to make it this year then there is next year. But top 4 in a 16 team league is not failure. It just isn’t the ultimate success.

Do people not realize there’s 34 teams getting DOUBLE the money we’re getting from a media deal, and another 32 getting about the same as us. If we fire CMC, we are not getting our top pick for a cream of the crop hire.

YOU may think ISU is a destination job that coaches will take less for. That’s just not a reality. We are extremely lucky with CMC and I really question your intelligence if you think we should fire him and go bargain hunting

Just so we are clear, I don’t want Campbell to be replaced. I think he is a fantastic coach.

So we're 1 win away from you being satisfied? Or then you'd say you want 2 conference championships?

I’d have a very strong argument saying winning a round robin Big 12 title outright with Oklahoma and Texas, during a pandemic no less, is more impressive than anything any Iowa State football coach has done in its history.

And the fact that they are back in the conversation of a Big 12 title again should cement his legacy even more.

There hasn't been such a thing as an outright Big XII football title since 2016.

Nice that we finished #1, but that still isn't winning anything meaningful.

That's not a thing.
