Barnes, Brackins, and the future

It is clear something has to be done to get more muscle on these players. As for players motivating themselves, I dont know about that. The way they look it doenst seem they have the motivation to do the extra now.
Diante improved his bech by 100lbs (yes, it was pitiful before) in the offseason. If he can do half that this offseason, he could be vastly improved.

I agree; something different has to be done. When practice started last fall, GMac talked about what a great off-season they had, and how much stronger the team was, and all the weight they gained. I said then on this board that it sure didn't look like it...
Maybe they need someone to really kick ***.

I dunno if anyone noticed it, but shown on the Cyclones.com BXII Tourney video, apparently Andy Moser traveled with the team. Since he was playing one-on-one with Brackins (IIRC), I assume he has a good relationship with the players.

If GMac wants bigger and stronger guys, he needs to recruit it. The wt. room/program is not going to fix the sins.
I seem to recall that Shaq went to LSU at something like 220 pounds--the guy was a gazelle.

Players may be skinny as high schoolers, but I'm sure that Mac looks at genetics. For example, there's a kid named Doug who'll be playing in the State Championship game tonight, and I doubt that anyone expects him to stay as skinny as he is.

IMO, you have to field at least one marque athlete to be near the top in a major conference.
Oddly enough, this year we were supposed to have two marquee athletes. One chizzed his teammates. The chizdiot.

Genetics do play a role in it. But in Mac 3 years here he hasn't had one player that can put muscle on?
How do you know that? Only one guy has been here through all three years, and AT actually lost weight this offseason to get quicker. The next two in terms of seniority (and physical maturity) would be Petey and SH--and both were expected to be walkons. Brister was signed for his strength, and is gone. And I'm pretty sure that both Diante and CB are stronger than they were as freshmen, whether or not they've put on a great deal of weight--and if Diante had put on twenty pounds of muscle, how would you tell? 155 to 175?!!

Sure, Hamilton and Lucca need to get chiseled, and Pomlee and Eikmeier need to put on a lot of muscle, but I guess we'll see how that turns out over the summer, or next fall.

I'm just rambling now, so I'll wander off and enjoy the weekend. All of you, too!

I think players can pack on the muscle if done right. That comment was a question to a someone sayin we are not getting the right type of players.

Thanks. I was wondering, and see the connection now. Have a great weekend--ain't sunshine great!!!

Genetics do play a role in it. But in Mac 3 years here he hasnt had one player that can put muscle on? Cory J had a big frame and didnt look to ripped to me. Look at Boozers brother, he is huge yet he cannot get ripped. AT is another player that should be bigger. SH's brother wes ripped as a Sr, what happed to Sean. Ham's dad was a FB player so it will be interesting to see what he does. Teams like OSU and KSU seem to have a team loaded with ripped players, you cannot tell me the only reason they are that is because of they are recruiting players with better genes.

Yes, I am saying the players from OSU and KSU are bigger and stronger because their coaches are recruiting players with better genes. That is the starting point. Guys with who come in bigger/more naturally muscular have better muscle building upside. If you recruit a muscular 190 lb guard and put that guy on a lifting program, he has more muscle growth potential. He more than likely has more work capacity and he has a stronger central nervous system. You can push him hard in the wt room and on the floor and his body will thrive because of his genetic blueprint. Contrast that with a 165 lb guard and he more than likely has less work capacity, and a weaker central nervous system. The implications are his body starts to break down or catabolize if you push him to hard. These types tend to get sick because their system are under to much stress. He will have a much harder time trying to build muscle while playing basketball 2 hours a day (which kids generally do even in the off season). If you are lucky you might get that kid up to 180, which is really good progress, but the 190 lb kid from the former example has a better chance of ending up at 210 or 215. So what you have after it is all said and done is a 180 pounder going up against a 215 pounder. There is a lot of kids that are so freaking athletic and skilled that size and strength are not a factor. However, ISU does not have any 165 lbs Allen Iverson or a tooth pick like Kevin Garnett or even a Mike Taylor types on the team. ISU needs to do one of two things or both. They need recruit some brick sh%t houses like Kenny Pratt, Kantrail Horton and Stevie Johsnson or get some athletic freaks who compensate for lack of bulk with the skills, quickness and jumping ability.

Well I guess the staff needs to get a DNA sample from prospects so they can map it and see if they have the muscle gene

DNA samples probably aren't necessary. We could probably start by not recruiting 6'0" 160 lb. kids who can't do anything except hit wide-open shots against sub-standard small-town, midwest basketball competition.

OUCH.

Bingo!

No, you and just eye ball a kid. Good God. Here lets try this. Here, let me put an example out there for ya so you can "get it". Who has better genetics, Arnold or Pee Wee Herman? Yeah I'm being a smart *** but I am just trying to make a point. Pee Wee can lift all he wants and he will never put on as much muscle as Arnold. Maybe he should spend more time in the wt room to catch up? Nope, that will just break his body down and make things worse. If some one like Pee Wee Herman lifts wts, he better be careful on how much time he spends and how hard he pushes or he will be going in the other direction. His genetics and body chemistry will put the breaks on pretty darn fast if he spends to much time in the wt room. Arnold, even without the help of anabolics can train like a mad man for a longer duration and it will only help him gain more. All you have to do is eye ball his build and his muscle bellies and it smacks you in the face that this guy has what it takes to gain more.

Oh, sorry about that man. I didn't catch that. I'm a little slow on the uptake tonight.
