House of the Dragon

She is desperate and looking for any kind of advantage she can muster. She knows Vhaegar alone puts the advantage on the greens side, and she is not getting great support from Daemon or her small council. Her son is acting like a little twerp lately too. I also feel like she promised these people something. Land, titles etc. They have all been oppressed by Aegon/Aemund and the Greens, too, so they would be more inclined to side with Rhaenyra imo.
My initial thought about the reaction of Jacaerys to Seasmoke's "lowborn" rider was that he was indeed acting like a twerp. After all, it was his idea to try to find more dragon riders in the first place.

But thinking about it more, his entire life, he's had to endure whispers and ridicule over his parentage. An open secret that has caused him, and his family, great pain over the years. But the one thing that legitimized him, was his claim to a dragon. It set him apart, because "only a true Targaryen can claim one.". Expanding that pool to other highborns with Targaryen ancestors is one thing. But if some bastard off of the street, with silver hair and a tall tale can claim a dragon, then that one thing he could cling to, that made him special, is tarnished, if not completely destroyed. That's a big rug to have pulled out from under you. I can see where the reaction might be anger and refusal.

Fair but feel like she should have at least had them commit to her or something. Maybe they just didn't show it. Just seemed pretty haphazard

I would assume more than zero of the new riders will also be cannon fodder for Vhaegar at some point. She's probably just playing the odds.

My thinking about it not you mean the exact thing he said to his mom? :p

Lol. Fair enough. I didn't rewatch it, and was thinking about it today on my lunch break. Apparently I remember him being more petulant than he was.

He mostly was, but that part was well done and she definitely felt his point. No alternative for her though.

Jacaerys is a bastard as well.. So I don't know why it was a shock that others of similar background can be dragon riders..

I don't want spoilers but it seems impossible right now for only Vhagar and maybe Dreamfyre can "win". Rhaenyra has a total of seven dragons at her disposal (assuming Daemon and Caraxes would come if called). Maybe 8 if the mystery dragon eating animals gets claimed by Rhaena

7: Vermithor, Silverwing, Seasmoke, Caraxes, Syrax, Vermax, and Moondancer.

Getting annoyed by HBO’s consistent process of having multiple episodes with just setup and try to cram all the action into the series finale. I get the desire for a buildup, but GOT and HOTD both have just wasted episodes and then too much to finish in the finale. Make the finale two episodes to not feel rushed.

If all you're after is action, I'm not sure stories set in the George RR Martin universe are for you. The story is as much about the "setup" events that cause the action, as it is about the action itself. It's not trying to be Die Hard with a thrill every minute.
The "setup" is the "game" in Game of Thrones. These stories are based on a butterfly effect, where small events lead to larger ones. That's the point.

Maybe you should watch anime or just play video games? The plot and character drama is what makes the story.

This show is awesome.

I think it's not so much that they can be dragonriders, but rather than Rhaenyra would allow them to elevate societally in that way. When he called the others "mongrels" he made it clear that he feels above them. Since he doesn't have the hair, at least dragonriding distinguished him and validated his Targ-ness.

His original plan of finding high-borns to be extra dragonriders had a bit of a safety net in that those people may have already sworn fealty or would at least abide the order of succession to Jace. Now the other bastards could have similar claims and proof, threatening his future claim to the throne.

I think.

Anyone else feel like it's a little reckless for Rhaenyra to just trust a bunch of randos with dragons? Like how does she know they would be loyal?
She addressed this didn't she? Didn't she say that if she doesn't have the riders for those dragons they can't win this war anyway?

Well, and now, it's not exclusively Targ blood, but also Velaryon blood that is the key.

It's a calculated risk she had to take. Besides, unless one of the new riders plans on hopping over to team Green, at worst they become a rogue element. They have no titles, no land, no followers, just a dragon at that point. While they might parlay it into something eventually, their best odds are hoping for elevation from low born to nobility by helping the Blacks end the war.

And speaking of switching to team Green, did anyone else for the briefest of moments think Ulf was heading to King's Landing to join Aemond? Finally realized it was to bait Aemond out to let him see the bolstered dragon forces of team Black and show him he's screwed.

Thought there would be more war/dragon scenes but looks like they held it off till season 3.
Definitely a season to lay out the chess pieces. I am always a fan of the story and set up in shows like this, however, it really hurts when they take so long between seasons.

Fully understand how expensive it is to create a season of this show, so I would rather keep the quality. But the fact we aren’t getting Season 3 until at the earliest spring of 2026 it seems, just sucks.
