***2023-24 Mens College Basketball Thread***

He said attendance and viewers matter to which I agree.
Iowa was so concerned with attendance under Ferentz that they wanted to do a "free tuition" raffle if students signed up for tickets.
(It was an illegal idea and had to stop)

So attendance does matter to ADs. Barta was never going to fire Kirk at that time.
Sure the AD’s job is to increase/maintain attendance, but they aren’t firing a winning coach if that drops and again you can’t show me a coach where that has happened to.

Also he said “records don’t matter” which even if you don’t agree with me you have to admit is a wild take

I honestly don't give a **** what they do either way. I just know they aren't firing a guy who just came off 5 straight tourneys and is 14-10 in a rebuilding year.

If you are here solely to make the point that Iowa is not firing Fran...I agree with you! I have said it on here before...if Fran isn't the Iowa MBB coach next season...it is because Fran chose to resign! No way they fire him! That said...there are a lot of arguments and points to be made for his dismissal (all posted here already) that it would not be a complete shock if he were to be fired.

The post from homer that started all this said “records don’t matter” nothing to do with part like you mentioned. If a team is winning everything else is a non issue. Howland is no different, if his last 5 season he won more in the tourney he wouldn’t have been let go.

If attendance in Iowa City suffered at this rate...and yet the team was in 2nd place and fighting for 1st...this discussion would not be taking place! UI would not fire Fran for winning at a high rate but not attracting fans...they just wouldn't because a university most places in the Midwest would not do that!

Alford was .589 (.477) at Iowa and was fired.
Fran is .597 (.514) at Iowa.

I don't think Fran gets fired but another year similar to this one and the seat is probably pretty warm.
I still think he just leaves at the end of the year.

I had heard that last week hawk media people were complaining about the Des Moines fans not making the drive over to the game. More excuses I guess.

I don’t think you’re understanding my comment then. The record doesn’t matter to the AD. The AD cares about the feeling of the boosters. Certainly the record is a significant impact on how the fans feel. But the fans will tell the AD when it’s time to move on from a coach.

In this situation, the fans have told the Iowa AD that it’s time to move on from Fran. It doesn’t matter that he’s 14-10. If he was 20-8 and CHA was this empty, he’d still have to go.

I do understand your point, if he was 20-8 coming off a final four run, he would in no way shape or form have to go regardless if not a single person was in the arena. You can’t name a single coach that has been let go that way, that’s why winning trumps everything

I guess that’s where we’ll have to agree to disagree. If a team were 20-8 and the arena were empty, there’s something else going on that would certainly trump winning.

This is the dumbest **** I've ever read in the history of this message board.
Lol. Thats not in the top 5 of dumb things ive posted. Though perhaps not super clear.

Painter sucks. He gets quality land whales at center to plow thru the B1G every year, and then he gets beat on the perimeter and outcoached in the tourney every year.

And Fran is demonstrably worse, just in different ways.

You can't point to a single coach who didn't lose his job in that same scenario either.

Maybe the part that @FriendlySpartan is missing is that Iowa State has been in the opposite situation as Iowa basketball many times. We've filled Jack Trice and Hilton to watch many bad teams. We weren't there because of wins or losses, we were there because it's our team. Of course winning more means more fans, but there's a large number of us who would show up regardless.

At Iowa, if you're winning and crowds are shrinking... you're losing your core fanbase. And that's bad, real bad.

Sports is entertainment. Winning is part of that sure. But it's more than that for some people.

Was he fired or 'fired' like told to leave to force his resignation?

Those are some excellent points. Doesn’t take away from the fact that coaches that win at or above the schools expected level don’t get fired though. That was my entire point. I’ve always been super impressed with ISU fans sticking it out through thick and thin. My Alma maters fan certainly don’t do that.
