Agree mostly but man WTF was Washington's coach thinking on that last drive? Why not just take a knee on 3rd down to guarantee the clock keeps running. Handing the ball off was a risk, and giving it to a guy who's already gimped up was not smart. Then the guy running into the punt returner... ugh, such a stupid play. It was almost a major choke job by their players and coaches.
He was probably trying to put the game away for sure by trying to get a first down instead of leaving 15 seconds left for something crazy to happen.
If Michigan wins, that's how they'll do it. They will have to play a whole lot more clean than they did yesterday, though, because unlike Alabama, you can't give UW free possessions. I would also look for them to be very aggressive in 4th down decisions. They are already but as you play more explosive teams, field position matters less.
The one thing Michigan has going for them is they've played under a defensive philosophy, for two years now, centered around limiting big time WRs. We'll see how they can do when they face the best. You're going to see a matchup of Odunze and Johnson and I'm pretty skeptical that with Penix throwing it, UM can hang out in that very long. UM put a lot of switch and trap stuff on film against OSU but with UW more willing to go vertical, I wonder how much of that will be useful. They've sat in 2-high for a lot of the year and that'll continue. This game will come down to how well UM can slow down Penix and how many FGs they can hold them to. I think UM will be able to run the ball well and they will be able to hit some things through the air but as we saw last year against TCU, they aren't built for a track meet. Both teams are going to see strength in the other side of the ball that they haven't seen all year and I'll be shocked by no outcome.
A running play into the line takes a lot longer than a kneel down. Trying to use as much of that 15 seconds as he could.
Maybe but if Penix was in the gun, took the snap, and waited a few seconds before kneeling I can't imagine it'd burn much more time handing it off to the RB.
I’m too lazy to look right now, but guarantee someone knows the time trade off as a metric.

You could make that equation if you time lapse a Taco Bell visit to a toilet sitting. Might be in minutes though.
That is what got Paul in trouble against K-State. Remember... could have knelt and punted and left them like 17 seconds, but chose to run and fumbled. We know how that turned out.
Truly. And with a guy like Penix you trust him to maybe dance around a bit and then take the knee.
And you'd trust your ST guys to not run into the punt returner... lol. Still have no idea what that guy was thinking or seeing out there.
