I've had season tickets for 17 years.

I agree with your next 2 paragraphs, that's nothing contrary to what I previously said.

Just know that when Tre, Milan, and Omaha are out there together.... Nobody is "playing the 5" and it'll be alright.
Except none of them will be able to guard a solid 6'10" post. Saw several teams in the tournament have success going to their "true" post and creating offense from there.

One of the things this staff has excelled at is playing some truly goofy line-ups in order to create/exploit mismatches. Jones, Ward, King, and (I’d guess) Bilew are all capable of playing minutes at the 5, depending on the matchup.

Anyway, back to recruiting… some shooters would really help open things up if we’re playing two non-shooters at the 4 and 5, otherwise driving lines are going to get really crowded.

Current dead period through noon, 4/6. Expect excitement, visits, and/or general carnage starting Thursday afternoon.
so several commits have been made from the portal already. Are you saying they committed without a 'visit' since its been a dead period? Realizing of course that the season is just finishing for 'all' teams.

Ideally we would have a Sonogo, Clingan or Kalkbrenner. But TJ is building the roster year-over-year. We have a 2024 commitment from JT Rock that fills the mold.

That doesn't impact next year, but we should have 2 solid big defenders in Jones and Ward. If guys like King, Biliew, Momcilovic, Williams, Watson, Lipsey and transfers can grow our offense vs. this past season, then we don't need Ward or Jones to be scorers.

Current dead period started 3/30, so, in theory, they could have visited early. More likely: handlers had reached out and the whole thing was arranged well before the player even entered the portal.

Jones should never be shooting the ball as much as he does. He forces a number of bad shots on the inside when he could just as well pass it back out.

If Rob Jones is a starter then Otz missed out on EVERYBODY, and they're in a bad spot.

Sadly he just isn't a Big 12 level talent. He gets in the way enough on defense to add some physicality, but is a complete liability on offense.

Ideally able to find a post with more than one year of eligibility. Rock will be a nice addition, but no chance he'll be Big 12 ready physically his freshmen year. We'll lose King, Ward, Jones, and likely Biliew after this next season. That post is going to be THIN if they're unable to land someone.

"Starter" may more accurately be described as "the guy who goes in first" in this scenario, not the guy who gets the most minutes. I think we might see Rob 15, Hasan 15 and "other" at 10, or some similar mix, where there really isn't a true main guy and the position is just rotational, particularly if we don't land a big (and I personally think scoring guards are way more important to land, so guards are a need and another big in the mix (a true starter as you would term it) is a want).

Jones is not great but he shot 47.1%. He attempted 5.2 shots and had 0.9 assists per game in 17 minutes. A player that most people here at CF love, shot only 43% while attempting 12 shots per game. He played 36 minutes per game and only averaged 1 assist pre game. I guess this player shouldn’t have attempted 12 shots per game.

What if we’re not going after big men this year because Jones, Ward and King will more than suffice for next year as long as we get some ball dominant guards and shooters?

Next year with those three leaving you have a ton of PT for that position that you can sell whereas you don’t have that luxury this year.

Disagree, he's a serviceable backup 5. The problem is his minutes and usage.

I'm not sure why the coaching staff has seemed to give him the green light to shoot. It's either and automatic miss or a foul which is the same thing.

Jones took all of his shots around the rim. 47% from there isnt good

Shooters are definitely a need - no argument there. Just not sure I can take another season of 3ft hook shots being rocketed off the backboard, and praying you get just 1 make out of a trip to the free throw line.

Trust in Otz I suppose! I'm sure they're working hard right now to put together a more well rounded squad.

He shouldn’t have been playing as much as he was and a lot of that was probably due to Shoon’s dip in production and Ward not being ready to go right away. That, and I’ve mentioned this before, but he was catching the ball a lot in late clock scenarios and should never be catching the ball then. That’s on our guards.

Getting guards who can create by themselves where Rob would only catch for an open layup will make us better and make Rob look better.

What players are we ACTUALLY in on? Like the players also interested and potential visits to Ames? I haven't heard of anyone yet..... Just the original list of 10-15 that we reached out too a few weeks ago. Lots of good named guards out there would be awesome to get 2 of them.
Join Premium and CW will tell you all about them.

Yes. We've had that happen at Iowa State too with transfers committing before visiting.

The staff is working hard to improve the team, but I haven't seen them intensely connected to any true C in the portal this year.

With Ward staying I believe it will be Ward and Jones splitting the true C minutes next year so be prepared. There were some frustrating moments but ISU has gotten to the tourney in Rob's two years so it isn't the worst option. I would like to see Ward come into his own and grab the starting C position but that will be an offseason story line to monitior.

To ease your concerns I do think the staff will be looking to go small next year with Omaha and King getting some minutes at the 5.
