Fertilizing my lawn for initial spring application

I just got back in the house from putting some down - downwind that is, it spread really well
Just went out and raked leaves. Damn were did they all come from? One would have though it was a leaf blizzard or something. With all the wind and dirt blowing around, I'll probably get a nice top dressing on my yard.
I salute the dead leaves that have remained attached to the trees during these winds.
Is today a good day to fertilize my lawn, and plant grass seed in a few bare spots? I have some peat moss to put over the seed as well.
Is it weed and feed or just feed? Most spring weed and feed mix's have pre emerg in them so you won't get germination..
From experience, I'd hold off on any fertilizer applications until after spring green up and you know the weed situation is manageable. Or else you are just giving yourself some powerful weed blooms this spring...
It’s called renovator, then for my next application in a month or so I have a weed and feed called seed safe. They are from Grass Pad.

If yes, I wouldn't put it down until 3-4 weeks after your pre-emerg application. I would rather seed and feed in May/June then now and compete with weeds.
Just a backyard DIYer though, if expert turf folks would do it different..

RustShack - you’ll want to put step 1 of the “idiot guide” down first. Renovator is step 2 I believe (I live in KC area as well).
Also - from my experience you can always call them and ask if it’s a good time to apply. Their service is really good.
What are we thinking...a couple more weeks?

I know grass doesn't germinate until 50 degrees and there is a risk of frost. When would be a good time to put some seed down to patch some spots? I tried to get them to take last fall but they never did. I thought with spring moisture it would help some to try it again.
As far as I know you can lay it anytime. It might take longer to germinate, but some people do dormant seeding and lay it in the winter.
Anyone use the Sunday Lawn Care plan? Prices don't seem too terrible, and I like it is spreadable with a hose versus the granules. I moved into a new house last May and the grass is pretty good in the front yard but the backyard has 2 large maple trees so lots of shade and not as full back there with some weeds.

I have not done a formal soil test (i did a Rapitest one that you look at the colors for pH, N, P, and K but the test was hard to get info off of since the colors really didn't look accurate at all) but wondering if in general the pH of the lawn soils in central Iowa are acidic or alkiline? I am considering adding lime but not sure if I am wasting my money. I have been fertilizing 3-4 times a year and don't irrigate.
