I get what you are saying, and again who knows if any of this is true. But I still contend in any setting like this a team vote is a cop out. You are the coach, you make the big bucks. Talk to your leaders and get a sense of what they are thinking. But ultimately you make the call on what's best for the team, and that's why you get paid millions.

Again who knows if that's what happened here so this isn't necessarily a shot at TJ. I just think "team votes" are dumb.

TJ would've gone in with a decision already being made essentially and would've talked to the team about their thoughts on the situation and whether they agreed.

Who knows what really happened but I've always found it kind of comical that a coach who is paid a significant amount of money would ever put anything up to a team vote. Take in the information and make a decision that you are paid to make. This isn't Survivor.

And conferencing about it, getting feelers and letting the players including Caleb have the conversatiin about it sounds much more 'involved'.

If it went down like this that's imo a healthy way.

Maybe. It sounds like TJ and Caleb had agreed on a course of action and the team overruled him somewhat, which is fine. I'm all for player input, so long as the final decision falls back on the coach and the coach is willing to wear it.

Which TJ has and even Grill has come out and said he understands why dismissal was necessary.

That's hilarious generational stuff there. Cheating is at the heart of many championships, almost certainly here at ISU, too. You're just naive enough to think it's a "younger generation" thing when it's been at the heart of sports and everything else as long as there have been sports and everything else.

I have little to add other than wondering why, if this was a problem festering over weeks, he wasn't benched or suspended to give him a chance to correct himself before it escalated to outright dismissal. Because this is a real bummer of an ending for both sides.

I'm sure TJ will be asked about that and I'll be curious to hear what he says.

Wow, I just read the full message from Caleb Grill. I am truly sorry that he is dealing with mental health issues. He love for the University and the Cyclones is undeniable, a Cyclone for life. The Cyclone family needs to stand behind Caleb and offer all of the support that we can give. Right now the young man needs our help not our criticism. Caleb, please know that we appreciate everything that you have done for the Cyclones and that you have our support.

With every employee that I've ever dismissed (except for egregious things), I've sat down with them and clearly laid out what they were doing wrong, what the expectations were going forward, and the repercussions if similar things happened again. I have no doubt TJ and the staff followed a similar path.

Misinterpretation. The difference is that people on here seem to want to justify cheating because the other guys are doing it. I just can't jump on that ship. And if the evidence was there we were doing it, I'd bail.

Completely agree. It's that it 'appears' more fans are wanting it, which I can't condone. Probably for fear it may reach economy of scale.

There is speculation that he may have been serving a non-public suspension when he missed the @texas and @K-State games. I doubt that will ever be confirmed though.

It's likely a tricky situation. Grill seemed capable of being better and maybe got a few chances.
