Our school was very small (I had a graduating class of 15) and we did not have football as a sport, so Homecoming was during basketball season. We'd usually have a bonfire in the school yard behind the school the night before. All four classes would split the cost to hire a band for the homecoming dance.

On my first homecoming date (girl I ended up dating through most of high school), we were dropped off to eat at a steakhouse. I was so nervous, when they asked me what type of potato I'd like with my steak, I totally blanked out and could not for the life of me remember what the options might be.

My favorite memory from undergrad homecoming was going "duck hunting" in the morning before the parade.

My friends and I won the school lip sync contest. First prize was nothing.

It's been downhill ever since.

Got dumped by my High School girlfriend my Senior year shortly after Homecoming because I jokingly said she didn't deserve pictures being taken at the dance. She took Homecoming way more serious than I did.

In high school, during homecoming week, we had an air guitar competition. Basically it was like the LipSync battle you see on TV. Each group got to perform their song in the auditorium. It was complete debauchery. One group choose Van Halen's Hot for Teacher and another choose Billy Squire's The Stroke. You can imagine how those played out on stage.

They got smart after that and required administrative approval of the song before hand.

Did anyone else participate in "Torch-a-thon" back in the 80s and 90s? Some great trips to Lawrence and Stillwater.
