Pollard sounds off on NIL, changing landscape of college athletics in interview on Murphy & Andy

This is why I wonder why there isn't more talk of the ISUs of the world breaking away first, as opposed to letting the top tier bully everyone else. There are many more ISUs in college athletics than there are Alabamas. When will that tier exercise their strength in numbers and collectively agree to a more functional governance structure and competitive landscape? When talented P5 coaches start getting fed up, that seems like motivation enough to rally your peer group and bring some sanity, fairness, and transparency back to college competition.

I think part of the reason they haven't is they are waiting to see how the TV money shakes out/Amazon or somebody streams the nonB30 games. If we are competitive in what ever league we are in I'll still retain my tickets and go to the games.

Iowa State to division 2 confirmed. Campbell to NFL confirmed
Why are you looking at it so black and white? Seems like a strong fan base like ISU's could still support a very strong program playing against very strong competition.

I've got to disagree with this one, it would function just like the NFL, and all 30 teams would be happy. Each team would have periods of success, followed by periods of rebuilding, (there would eventually be a salary cap and collective bargaining) . Also keep in mind that a little over .500 would make the playoffs. They would all be happy.
Are they going to have those 30 schools rotate draft picks of recruits based on how bad their year was? That's what keeps the NFL with a reasonable balance of parity.

This article is an excellent example of why TJ and Matt probably have said what they've said. The billionaire booster is basically now the GM of the Athletic Department.

Also, the quote where he says "he doesn't renegotiate" is a small example of the chaos that some of these kids are entering.

As many here have pointed out, if/when the 30 team super league happens, there will be a LOT of disappointed fan bases after a few years. Tennessee and Texas fans will start crying foul after they don't have winning seasons repeatedly. (sort of like how Texas seems to cry and destroy conferences every couple decades)

I also think the media deals are pretty shortsighted. People in Iowa won't just magically start supporting Alabama or Auburn or USC. People are fans of the schools they went to, or have familial connections to. This isn't pro sports culturally. Fans of "relegated" schools aren't going to just decide to start watching and cheering for the new league.

The NFL, NBA, etc. all have pull because they're the absolute top tier of competition, and they are the best of the best. Nobody watches G-league on TV. College football/basketball are good on TV because of the rabid fanbases. They are fans of the universities. The media market for the "super league" will be much less than people think.
This is very well said. The SEC has had the best players and top teams for at least two decades and I very rarely watch it. I watch ISU and the Big 12 and Big 10 West because those are the teams I have always watched due to regional interest. That won’t change if the top 30 break off.

And they guy said back to his agent. Well, good luck elsewhere then. That was a stupid move by the agent.

I would be fun to anonymously poll university Presidents and Athletic Directors if they would be interested being part of the minor league structure that Jamie and ND's AD Swarbrick mentioned as a possible break-out division within P5. Swarbrick characterized the breakout organization as something where athletes would not go to school and universities would license their name to an outside sport organization.

IMO most university Presidents would probably want no part of pay-for-play and it's Title IX implications. Also I doubt universities want to deal with the legal issues if athletes are employees. Long term sport injury medical expenses and the huge liability for CTE.
I think the number of Presidents signing up for this model would be miniscule and IMO it is being blown way out of proportion. Greg Sankey doesn't even want to see this based on what I've read.

My NIL money will go to my grandchildren as they pursue their educational and vocational goals after High School. I can’t justify using the money that I give and help them out with things and giving it to an athlete who has all their living expenses and educational costs paid for. NIL is a donation asked above and beyond what fans are already paying. Something has to be cut if NIL is to be added to my budget. I have higher priorities. And it seems we are always asked to give more and more. Never ever have enough.

A big part of it is how they’ve gone about it. It’s not really anyone’s fault how it’s gone down but I don’t give money to panhandlers and sure as **** not going to give anything to sports players that already have a 6 figure total compensation package in the old setup.

Now the soccer team, etc that don’t just get a full ride because of the sport they play, I would think about. Also for walk-ons.

Personally, I think the most exciting thing about this new world will be the mental gymnastics that people will perform to want coaches fired for not winning enough because they either don’t have enough good players, or the good players leave after every season for better opportunities.

How is that different from the old world?

I agree with this.
My guess, however, is that more than 30 teams go “semi pro.” I think the donor dollars will decide who participates, not principles. There are a lot of teams with mega donors.
I know if this happens I will never watch them play.

I don’t know, were people losing their minds about schools losing any good players they may have developed because they could go sign with an agency to transfer to another school for hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Yeah...I ain't buying that one! Hyperbole for sure. I mean...I understand the emotions involved and the sentiment but no way that happens! JP could make his point without making those types of statements. And besides...the only people that matters to are Iowa State fans! No one else would care!

Jamie’s very dialed into the mindset of his fanbase.

Those types of statements are meant to appeal to the hysteria.

It’s not a coincidence be then said Campbell would go to the nfl.
