WILLIAMS: Analyzing Iowa State’s NCAA Tournament situation after a big week

There may not be one but id also like a list of undefeated non-con P5 teams to miss the tourney. Lists are probably both 0.
Well not a list of just p5 (also this list is teams undefeated overall, couldn't find one for just non con, data from Wikipedia)

  • During 1939, Long Island University finished the regular season 20-0 but decided to accept instead an invitation to the second NIT (which they won) instead of the first and only NABC tournament (later called the NCAA tournament), as the NIT was more prestigious at the time. It wasn't until the mid-1950s that the NCAA required that its tournament would have "first choice" in determining teams for their field. Before then, many of the more successful teams during the regular season chose to play in the NIT instead of the NCAA tournament.
  • During 1940, Seton Hall finished the regular season 19–0, but their record had been built largely against weak teams and thus did not earn them an invitation to the postseason tournament.
  • During 1941, Milwaukee State finished the regular season 16–0, but their record had been built largely against weak teams and thus did not earn them an invitation to the postseason tournament.
  • During 1944, Army finished the regular season 15-0 but owing to World War II, the Cadets did not accept an invitation to postseason play.
  • During 1954, Kentucky finished 25–0 and were invited to the tournament, but declined the invitation.
  • During 1973 the North Carolina State Wolfpack finished the regular season 27–0 and ranked #2 (behind undefeated and eventual tournament champion UCLA) but were barred from participating in the NCAA tournament while on probation for recruiting violations.
  • During 1979, the Alcorn State Braves finished the regular season 27–0, but did not receive an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. The Braves accepted a bid to the NIT, where they lost in the second round to eventual NIT champion Indiana

TCU was 13-0 to start the season in 2015 and did not get a bid at 18 overall wins, that’s why most are saying we need 1 more win and we’re set.

Think it’s been posted elsewhere that worst conference record to ever get an at large bid was -4 and it was one of Orr’s teams in the 80s.

I think 7-11 in conference puts us in very safe territory. I think 8-10 - which probably puts us 5th in the conference - gives us a decent seed. Really want to stay off that 8/9 line as not many teams this year scare me once you get past the top 4 or 5.

There are few conferences that have ever been this strong, top to bottom. That is going to matter.

TCU beat nobody’s in the preseason. Believe they ended up only beating one tanked team all season in addition to having a terrible conference record.

That is not even comparable.

The WV game is so huge because it's a chance to not only solidify tourney hopes, it's a chance to really get rolling again. A 3 game winning streak, I think, would turn into 5 with KState and Okie State to follow. That's a good place to be with confidence going into Big 12 Tournament which is suddenly looking like a lot of fun for us again.

I went through yesterday and took a brief look at resumes, and put us on the 6 line coming into today. You could even have an argument for higher as I'm not sure Ohio State or LSU have a better resume than we do. Also, I got 16/16 right in matching the committee's seed release, so...
You should post a bracket and tell the guy who runs bracketmatrix.com

Other teams will be fading over the next two weeks which will help us. OU is done, tcu finishes big 12 with the schedule we started with, Oregon just lost and plays the LA schools this week... one win and we avoid the roller coaster these other teams will be riding.

Oregon will be interesting. They beat both LA schools on the road and now get them at home.

Need that WV win. Even if we do beat WV, if there's one thing I try to learn...don't get too high cuz one performance doesn't predict the next game's. Yesterday was fun and encouraging. But the TCU win was still a 'grind out struggle to get points anybody could have won it' affair. Grant it, we don't have to play KU or Tech the next three games, but life in the big12 is too unpredictable and hard.

I feel the same way. Winning against WV takes some pressure off and lessens the chance of us playing tight. @KST will be a dogfight, then we have senior night. Would hate to be going to Waco needing a win.

I don’t think too many think we can lose out and get in. I think people saying ISU is a lock are making the assumption they win at least one considering the schedule. Would be awesome to get on a roll and get to a 7, but get in and that’s incredible.

If we finish 2-2 with home wins and road losses (most likely imo) for a 7-11 conf record, then the season for me will have come down to the home losses against KSU and TCU. Those were unacceptable, and the only reason I will walk away from the regular season a little dissatisfied. Turning those should-be wins into losses possibly moved us from a 5 or 6 seed to a 7 or 8 seed.

The season will come down to the non-conference season since that will likely be the reason they got into the tournament.

Must admit, a week and a half ago and you were to mention NCAA’s I would’ve scoffed at the notion. Now, I agree—a couple more wins should cinch it. Now, to get a victory or two in KC would make the momentum going to the big dance good (however in history past, Big 12 wins in the tournament carries little leverage with the committee unless you win the whole damn thing). Worst case scenario, say we tank the rest of the way you still got a National Invitational Tournament bid assured right now.

I'm already satisfied. This team won 2 games last year. 2 ******* games. Do I want more? Of course, I hope they win 2-3 more and get in as a 6-7 seed. But even if this team fails to qualify for the NCAA tournament, it has still been largely successful considering what expectations were heading into this season.

Johnny's 5-9 team beat #3 seed Missouri to make the semifinals. Doubt they would of made the dance without it.
