NFL: ***2022 NFL Season Thread***

My OT solution:

1. Jump ball at the 50 yard line - has to be a defensive starter doing the jump ball. the team that recovers the jump ball (like jumping on a fumble) gets the first possession.

or

2. The QB's who ended the game go to the endzone. They each throw it as far as they can. Longest throw in the air gets first possession. If they step over the endzone line it's a fault and they lose the throw (just like in long jumping).

Like the old XFL. Instead of a coin toss to start the game we put a football at the 50. Each team picks a speedster to go get the ball.

Get the ball, get the win.

You're on the right track but not quite there yet. Line the long snapper's up 15 yards apart from each other. First to hit the other's ass gets first possession

My ideal OT: 3-on-3 linemen tug of war to decide the winner

I think nose tackle vs nose tackle in a sumo style wrestling match.

Edit: I don't think there is a good solution for OT in football games. You either end up in a shootout (college style) or it still becomes that the coin toss winner is the deciding factor. Using last night as an example, say Buffalo did get the ball for a series and goes down and scores a TD. What's the determining factor after that? Sudden death with the next score? It still comes down to who won the coin toss.

I think you need either a set time period (10 min) or have to go college style but harder (ie start at 45 or 50), must go for two, no field goals allowed. Even then it could be a long night for some of the defenses (or offenses).

My wife and I were debating the kickoff.

She was all about squib kicking to use clock.

I was kick it out of the endzone because I didn't want the chance for the ball to get into Hill's hands.

I missed this in real time yesterday, but this is hilarious.

I can't find a clip of it, but my favorite funny moment was in the same game when TB (at least I think it was TB) scored a rushing touchdown from the 1, and Cris Collinsworth mentioned on air that it took two thrusts for them to get it in. I had to rewind the broadcast to make sure I heard it right, and sure enough that's exactly how he said it.

Soccer has two entire periods of extra time first though, and you play them both even if teams score. And also even if it's a cup match that does go to a shoot out, it's not first team to score in the shootout wins.

Yeah, and they're generally **** quality because everyone is exhausted. Then the shootout has about as much to do with who's better as playing rock, paper, scissors.

So last night for instance, Buffalo likely ties it if they get the ball, then what? The quality is going to fall off a cliff pretty fast.

I disagree that extra time usually sucks I guess, but even still a shootout doesn't come down to who can get the ball first and score.

If the Bills tie it up then they keep playing, I don't see the problem there.

Get the ball, get the win.

You realize in the very first game, in the very first attempt of this, a player got seriously hurt? If I remember correctly I think the XFL even dropped this after the first couple of games.

With, say, a minute or more left -- it probably doesn't matter much. With under 15 seconds, I'd lean towards squib -- either no return where they dive on it or kneel it down, or the return takes up a full play's worth of time and most likely leads to a hail mary situation after. Squib could have a small chance of creating a silly muffed ball situation, too.

This is kind of where I’m settling; college-style OT, but start at the 40, and no extra points. If you score a TD you have to go for two. I’m okay with allowing FGs, though.

I thought I was brilliant with the idea, but turns out this is exactly the OT format they use in the CFL (except it’s the 35, not the 40).

Poochish kick like ISU in the Fiesta Bowl. Tricky to catch/field and if it is caught it may at least take a second off to secure.

Hindsight being what it is the squib was the play, knowing now that you needed to burn 3 seconds maybe it hits off someone's hands so they can't kneel it immediately.

At the time though it didn't even cross my mind that you could drive from the 20 into field goal range in 9 seconds, my thought was kick it deep and don't give the ball to their returner.
