I am confident the coaches are relaying truthful information to any recruit who asks.

Campbell and JP have better more important things to do than comment on rumors. Plus it looks petty to refute or make contrary remarks to what another school says in their hiring of a coach.

For example USC says Riley was their #1 choice, it would be a bad look all around for Campbell or JP to say no they offered Campbell and he turned them down.

It's better to just not comment.
If they can craft a response to the recruits that ask, they can craft public sound bites for those that don’t, as well as the potential recruits that are listening. And by god it shouldn’t be truthful. Damn Hoiberg selfishly went that route for a year, killing recruiting. It should address the rumors in a manner that doesn’t incriminate, but it addresses.

Better things to do? Lol, JP just spent hours rambling on a call in show. He’s commenting, just poorly.

No one mentioned refuting another school. Your example is so bad. You say you don’t have interest. When USC hires Riley, all good.

He said if they went with an "interim" coach, that that coach wouldn't be their guy in the long run. They haven't gone with an interim. To me, that means they are trying to get Freeman. They are probably also trying to keep Freeman and Rees from following Kelly to LSU.

I think they will hire Freeman. That, or they are holding out for Fickel. If they wanted Cambell they would've hired him already IMO.

Heard Rees will not be going to LSU.
Also heard Freeman was not a fan of how Kelly handled leaving.

They aren't "crafting" a response to recruits they are talking to them on a regular basis as the coaches normally do and letting them know the truth of the situation.

As can be seen by the lack of comments from recruits they are handling the situation better than the fans, and they are the ones most likely to be affected.

I don't understand how people get upset about the departure.

"I know you all know this already but I've taken the job as head coach at LSU. It's an opportunity I can't pass up. I appreciate what every one of you men in this room did while I was in charge here and I wish you all the best of luck not only on the football field but in the classroom and your lives as well. Thank you for all you have done and I will be rooting for you."

That's 30 seconds. And he probably has to keep it brief because if he talks too much to former players it's probably an NCAA violation.

I wanted to believe that scenario, too. But maybe they already have a deal ...but they have to keep it under wraps to save face. Idk. People are giving me the impression that the AD wants Matt. Who knows how many people are included in the decision.

I think the assistants were mad because they are out recruiting and found out via social media instead of being told by kelly

If he wanted to be at ISU we’d have a deal
He doesn’t already have a contract at Iowa St?

You mean if he wanted to remove the chance of coaching ND he would sign a new one? He’s likely waiting to see if ND offers, but if they don’t, I don’t think there’s more to give that would necessitate a new deal. You don’t sign contracts every time another college hires a coach

I will never understand this logic, where it’s so burdensome to mouth the words “I’m not leaving ISU”. You’re paid millions of dollars a year, I’m pretty sure the money can heal those lip blisters you’d never get from stomping down rumors. We act like he’d have to spend weeks every year denying this. Just dumb.
You’re joking right?

Meh, with how leaks happen Kelly might not even have had paperwork signed before it was leaked. Yeah it sucks but that's the operating hazard of that profession.

I remember people being all pissed at Chizik being brief before departing for Auburn and didn't understand then either.
