I just don't know how much of a shot at Patterson we have. He already makes near $2 million and they can go higher, recruiting may be a bit easier to TCU and all he has to do is win that weaker conference and he has a legit shot at a BCS bowl... Tough to compete with...
We are Iowa State thats why. Plus this is the big 12 north...I think with a solid hire like this we have an outside chance to take a weak north division next year. If we can keep most of our players I dont think its out of the realm of possibility that we can contend now.

You are correct, there would be a sizable number that would want to go outside and get a big name...heck, some would even advocate going after Saban if Miles got the boot.
However, everyone has been pretty darned happy with the offense under Crowton. Actually, most think he has done more than Jimbo Fisher did as OC. And they were productive this year with a RS Frosh and a true Frosh getting most of the snaps at QB while not having the entire playbook under their grasp. My point is that most LSU fans would not be displeased with Crowton from what they have seen him do here.
The heat this year is on Miles and his decision to promote two unproven coaches on the defensive side to co-DCs...Doug Mallory (Bill Mallory of CU's kid) and Bradley Dale Peveto. The defense horribly underperformed for the talent they had on the team this season. Word is that Mallory is getting demoted, Peveto is getting canned, and the D-line coach is also getting canned after the bowl game.
Correct me if I am wrong but even if he went undefeated at TCU there is a possibility TCU wouldnt make a BCS bowl game b/c they arent in a BCS conference?

Wife being from Ames could actually be a good reason for him to consider it over comparable jobs like Minnesota. GP would be a fantastic hire - probably the best possible scenario.
TCU usually plays pretty tough out of conference schedule, it would have been tough to leave them out of the BCS this year even though Boise State got screwed. I just love watching barely .500 ACC teams in BCS teams though.
I think the reason Patterson (and previously Gill) might consider ISU is that there is more potential at ISU than TCU. I would argue that the TCU program is definitely better than ISU right now, but it's also at its proverbial ceiling.
If you go 12-0 at TCU, you might get to play in a BCS game, IF a few other things go your way.
At ISU you can go 8-4 and in some years win the North, putting you in a position to EARN a trip to a BCS game, not luck into one.
I guess a lot of it depends on what he's looking for at this stage of his career. If he's content with winning 10-12 games a year, winning the Mtn West here and there, and playing in low-level bowl games, then he won't consider ISU.
Whittingham's not going anywhere. He's entrenched at Utah. He took over the DC position there in the mid-90s from his father and was DC for 10 years under two head coaches before taking over. I'm an alum of both ISU and Utah and while I think that he would be a very good hire for ISU, I don't think there's a chance he's looking to go anywhere.
How about Vikings Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevel? He played for Wisconsin, coached a year at Iowa State under McCarney and has moved his way up from QB coach to O-Coordinator...He has Pollard connections...

The trick is getting a coach to think in that regard about ISU. Yes we might have the talent to win the Big 12 North next year. But our program has never shown the potential to compete with the upper Big 12 South schools, not to mention beat one to go to the BCS. Even looking at those "really good" North teams from the last couple years (Missouri and Kansas), they got destroyed by the upper level of the South. I'm not saying that can't change, but lets start by having a winning season before we throw out ideas about the BCS.
