I think as good and tough as she was, Poppins was undersized. Serious question, have we ever had a post player the caliber of what Texas, Baylor, or Maryland, even Iowa has? Not since Angie Welle is my guess.

Top notch posts, or true centers in the traditional definition, are a rare commodity and few schools have one. Not even that many for the WNBA draft this year which is why, as inconsistent and flawed as she is, Charli Collier is likely going #1. It's the same in MBB, everybody covets one but few actually have an elite true center.

I don't think of Maryland as having an elite post, they're a team of tall guards/forwards and athletics wings. Iowa's Monica Cinzano is one dimensional, really good when she she can get position inside, where she shoots a really high percentage, but can't play defense and doesn't rebound well for a gal her size. If you're playing over 30 minutes a game at her size she should at least out rebound her PG and she doesn't.

With our system, and considering all but the rare elite team opponents, all we need is someone to hold their own on defense, rebound adequately and at least offer some threat of scoring. The only true center returning from the Big 12 top players is KSU's Ayoka Lee. Baylor's Queen Egbo only got honorable mention. Our own Kristen Scott was 2nd team.

Added a new name: Nyamer Diew. She is a 6'1" F freshman at Butler. She was coming off an ACL tear last summer and got stronger toward the end of the season, averaging 9.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, and 3.8 blocks in her final four games of the season.

She may be looking to be closer to home (Sioux City). Here's a nice article about her off-the-court struggles: https://thebutlercollegian.com/2021...mer-diew-is-channeling-grief-into-positivity/

Do you know anything about schools involved ? Could be a nice addition to the team.

Wasn't someone we showed interest in before is it? Did her ACL hinder her recruitment?

Her limited stats at Butler make her seem like someone both ISU and Iowa would go after. One paper sounds like the type of athletic player (maybe a bit on the raw side based on shooting percentage) that both teams lack and could really use.

She played on the 2019-2020 SC East team that upset Caitlin Clark and Dowling Catholic in the regional final, keeping Clark from going to state her senior year.

She had 27 to lead her team to state.

I don't recall seeing her name before. She lived in Minnesota until moving to Iowa before her junior year. She led all of 5A in blocked shots both seasons she was in Iowa.

Short video here: https://siouxlandnews.com/sports/co...w04P-OJuBLoUVX9Ch1wUg-GZPPfncElFM3-Hj4boyp0Ug

Note from the video: she also had offers from George Mason, Illinois State, and U of San Diego. It seems like she was under-the-radar and is still scratching the surface as far as her potential.

Denae Fritz awards update related by CycloneNeurotic on another forum has this note (Thanks CycloneNuerotic!):

TwisterSister 2021 recruit Denae Fritz was just named to the regional (Knoxville, TN) all-prep high school girls basketball team.

Here’s today’s story in the Knoxville News Sentinel.(Sat. 4/10) https://amp.knoxnews.com/amp/7015905002

With this selection Fritz is in contention for the All-PrepXtra girls basketball player of the year awarded June 30, 2021.

Another impressive recognition for Fritz. Yes, I think we stole some talent out from under a lot of teams in the South East.

And of note, Maggie Vick was second team.

New addition to the list:

Ella Tofaeono, a 6'3" Jr at Texas A&M. She's originally from Australia and spent 3 years at Midland CC (one was a medical redshirt). Averaged 14.6 ppg and 10.6 rpg her final year at Midland. Barely got off the bench in her only season at Texas A&M, playing 64 total minutes in 16 games. That's a bit of a head-scratcher since she scored 27 points (on 75% shooting) and had 20 rebounds (12 offensive) in those 64 minutes.

She has two seasons of eligibility remaining. I assume she's not a grad transfer since she only has one year post-juco, but the NCAA is likely to pass a new rule for a permanent one-time transfer immediate eligibility waiver.

We finally got a transfer. Freshman Nyamer Diew from Butler Univesity has announced her commitment to ISU (credit to CY9008 for reporting the news in the other thread first).

This is the wing player we need after Maddie and Kylie left. It appears she's a good shot blocker.

Her name is pronounced like this: Nine-a-mer Dew
(Source: https://siouxlandnews.com/newsletter-daily/featured-mvp-nyamer-diew )

Interestingly, she tweeted her statement of leaving Butler on April 6 and "retweeted" Kylie's transfer-out statement on the same day.

The following is copied from Butler University Athletics Website.

Position: F
Height: 6-1
Class: Fr.
Highschool: Sioux City East
Hometown: Marshall, Minn.

2020-21 Freshman Season: Played in 16 games, making 10 starts… Averaged 5.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game… Led the team and ranked third in the BIG EAST in blocked shots per game (1.4)… Blocked 15 shots over Butler’s final four games (22 total)… Averaged 22 minutes of playing time per game… Shot 36 percent from the field (28-77) and 33 percent from 3-point range (12-36)… Connected on 16 of her 20 free throw attempts (80%)… Ended the year with 47 rebounds, 14 assists and 13 steals… Set multiple career-high totals vs. Xavier with 12 points, five blocks and four steals… Impacted the win at DePaul with 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds and three assists (3/1)… Went 3-for-3 from behind the arc to help net 11 points vs. Seton Hall (1/11).

High School: Averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 2.0 steals per game during her junior season... Team captain... Helped the Raiders win two conference championships... Holds the school record for most points in a single-game (35), and most field goals made in a single-game... Two-time team MVP... Two-time All-Conference selection.

Just a humorous take. Since her last name is pronounced the same as Dew in "Mountain Dew", the favorite soda of CBF, and she can block shots, maybe "Mountain Diew" could be a fitting nickname for her.

I did a brief online search but couldn't find highlights of Diew. Here's the full game of Butler vs UConn. Diew started the game, played 27 mins, scored 6 pts (2-4 from 3) and blocked 3 shots.

She has a skinny body type but a long wingspan.

She appears to be a friend of Paige Bueckers.

She could be a missing piece for the ISU roster- an athletic post player. In watching some highlight video- she has a much better dribble than I expected. Will be curious how Coach Fennelly uses her- as a 4, 5 or both.

It would be nice to have the ability to flex Ashley between the 3 & 4 depending on opponent.

If neither Scott or Johnson come back we are down to a 11 gal roster with SEVEN classified eligibility-wise as freshman. If everyone stays full years that will be a bit of a pig in the python as far as it passing through the roster over the next four years.

Maybe some more portal action with upper classman transfers in to come?
