Don't tell that to King. Being a scholarship player is a big deal, being a selected walk-on is special too. Realistically and historically their focus is on prepping the team. The last walk-on I can recall is Hagedorn.
Hagedorn did originally walk on but earned a scholarship in early October that first season, so she was never a walk-on during basketball season.

The last player to be a walk-on during the season was Melissa Youngblut. She was kicked off the team late her freshman season after getting into a fight with another student.

King is a combination of "Swiss Army Knife" and "The "Little Engine That Could." Yes! Along with her drives, she has skills in most facets of the game (though highlight distillation of her games may over-amplify them somewhat).

I saw some good outside, pick up and shoot. Three instances in the first two clips of stripping the ball. Decent ball skills and good speed, and quickness. And, she delivered a few nice assists. King may add a usable dimension to this year's team! Nice find.
I just watched all the highlight videos. Notes:
  • She's a pesky defender (both on-ball and help defense) with quick hands
  • She has a wide variety of offensive tools (threes, mid-range jumpers and floaters, drives)
  • She has a quick release
  • She's good at keeping the ball away from defenders on drives
  • She's a smart passer
Why is she not a Div 1 scholarship athlete?
  • She's 5'1" (or 5'5", or whatever her real height is)
  • She's not playing the game at a different speed than everyone else (which is especially necessary at her height)
  • Those videos are highlight videos, which by definition show only her good plays
She seems like one of those pesky point guards you see starting for the opponent in one of those low-major blowout games. The kind of player that would get a few steals and score some points but over the course of the game won't keep up with the ISU backcourt. That's not meant to be a knock on her -- her role is to be someone who will not see the court often except in blowouts and emergencies. She looks like she'll make an excellent addition to the roster as someone who is primarily a practice player and teammate.

Nice assessment.
