Using similar logic, we hired a better coach coming off Greg’s failed tenure than we did in 2015.
Prohm was the coach selected, not the best coach we could get. There are a myriad of other reasons, but hiring in March as opposed to May will help.
Actually that isn't using similar logic. After Greg's tenure, ISU took a chance on a guy with zero coaching experience. Not zero college experience, zero coaching experience whatsoever. It was a moonshot. and it worked but it wasn't some great coaching hire at the time.
Just a reminder: TJ has has exactly ONE recruiting class under his belt at UNLV.
Fred is the only legitimately reasonable home run hire that could happen. Everything else will be a crap shoot.
Here’s what I think happens. JP let’s the tournament play out and tries to get the “new hotness” that comes out of it. Easy way out.

gunner at his time at SDSU do you Have any updates to how his recruits fared during or after his 3 years?
What about grandmas grand prediction?

I'm not going to suggest that I have a good idea who will work out. Just thankful for a change and some hope. If Fred were actually able to work out, would be hard to turn that down. If not, just based on the very little - VERY little, to stress - that I've seen, I'd hope we look hard at Smith and Devries.
I realize TJ is probably at higher odds to get the job, but for those trumpeting him, if you step back, how can you really be passionate about him v. what we got in Prohm? I see some who suggest concerns about TJ be tossed aside, while at the same time arguing that similar concerns made it obvious why Prohm shouldn't have been hired -- e.g., success following very successful coach w/ stacked roster, what has he done on his own, easy explanations for current roster make-up in year 2/3, questionable re: Xs & Os but excellent recruiter...? Does it come down to the fact that he's more of a known in Ames, seems to really like ISU, has a wife who was a legendary player for ISU, and has a lot of experience as P6 asst? Maybe the MW recruiting connections?
Not trying to flame against TJ. And, this is not an argument for Prohm - he clearly needs to go. Just trying to understand why you think TJ is clearly so much better than what we hired in Prohm (at that time). Will definitely support TJ if hired; just trying to figure out the "would be a great hire" angle some are taking on him.
See the above post. Prohm had a much weaker resume than TJ does. That is just a fact. Will TJ be successful at Iowa State I think he would, but I can see preferring another option. What I just don't understand is why people think that they are really close in their resume's pre Iowa State.I guess it is time to come back and refute the ridiculous arguments against TJ.
I will first say that while TJ remains my top choice he isn't someone who I would say is the easy automatic choice. It should come through a thorough search and he should lay out his plans for Iowa State. My top three also include Smith (USU) and DeVries (Drake).
This idea that TJ is remotely on the same level as Prohm is just absolutely laughable. Prohm had very little resume before he was hired. He had one year of experience at an even FBS level program. He also had a weaker record as a head coach at Murray State than many give him credit for. He made the tournament one year while there in his first year. He had two NBA point guards while there which at that level wins you games. He also had no connection to the midwest.
TJ on the other hand has extensive P5 experience as an assistant. He is also midwest based in his recruiting. This lines up really well with our existing recruiting grounds. TJ coached three years at SDSU where he made the tournament 2/3 years and won the regular season the third year. Now at UNLV he got them to second place in the conference his first year. This year has not been very good, but since it is the outlier Covid can be a reasonable excuse for him.
So first off TJ has a significantly better resume than Prohm did when he was hired. Does TJ have flaws absolutely he does. He probably isn't the strongest X's and O's coach in the world. Part of his interview process is seeing how he builds out his staff. For him I think a former head coach that has the X's and O's talent would be good. Just like Fred did when he came here.
All of the other options have their own flaws. Smith's only P6 experience is a few years at Nebraska. DeVries I don't think would be willing to take the job and has only coached at Drake and Creighton. Some of the coaches with previous experience are probably to expensive and I'd question how much they would be into it at their age.
At the end of the day whoever we have is going to have flaws. Heck even Fred when he was here had plenty of flaws.

What have you seen from T.J. at UNLV to make you think he should be Prohm’s replacement? Much better candidates are out there.See the above post. Prohm had a much weaker resume than TJ does. He’s been an assistant here, that’s it. That’s the reason.
Id be shocked if there were any other P6 school fan bases clamoring for TJ.

That’s it. He might be the best choice but don’t put lipstick on a pig. He’s getting it because he made the right connections while here.
WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS.
