Did you hear the questions that Randy Peterson was asking Coach Prohm about whether he had spoken with AD Pollard within a week and a half? And what was said during those conversations? Just a real jerk approach about it I’m sorry. And then he had no other questions for Coach Prohm. I’m an really amazed Coach Prohm kept calm and didn’t reply to the stupid question with a stupid answer.

Listen, I’m frustrated with the overall team and the direction it is going and has gone. But I really don’t think by firing Coach Prohm this season that there would be any better out there during this pandemic. You just are not going to see many dismissals at head coach after this season. You think there is going to be Mark Few’s just waiting in the wings for us?? Get a grip people!

Prohm has been one of the worst P6 coaches in the country over the past 2 years. So yes, I really do think that firing him and replacing him with almost anyone else will yield better results. You said it your self, the direction of this program is awful. If we don't fire him this year, we are just delaying the inevitable and plunging the program further into the bottom of the Big 12.

I guess I don't see the issue with Randy asking the question. Half or more of the threads here on CF are about Prohm's job status. Why wouldn't someone ask about it?

Of course Randy should have asked it. Reporting is not about the fan’s feelings. It’s about getting the facts for the story. Of course Prohm is on the hot seat. And he’s adult enough and well paid enough to answer about it. And while the general consensus around here is that Prohm is a “great guy” he seems to be awfully insecure about being questioned by anybody.

I play a game in the car when I'm bored.
I turn on the "Cyclone Insider" podcast and when ever a new topic or question is asked, I pause the show and think about my answer/opinion.
Then, I play the show and listen for Randy's take.
If his take is the polar opposite of mine, I give myself a point.
I keep score of how many points I have to total number of takes.

I get a perfect score probably every other time.
That sounds like a lot of work for listening to a podcast.

Whatever one thinks of Randy Peterson, it's his job to ask these questions in this situation. Pollard isn't responding to his calls for obvious reasons, and as the head coach it's Prohm's job to answer (or deflect) those questions in the midst of a disastrous season.

It may be uncomfortable to watch and seem unnecessary, but it's 100% fair game and nobody would think twice if it were the coach of another team facing this kind of scrutiny.

Agree. Randy is not paid so Steve Prohm is comfortable, he is paid to not be scooped by the Cedar Rapids Gazette on whatever move Pollard may or may not make this year.

Amazing that the "hack blogger bros" on here given us more fair, forthright, detailed, interesting, and thought out coverage of the Cyclones than does the beat writer for the Des Moines Register, which is supposed to be the most prestigious journalistic publication in the state of Iowa. I don't want to turn this into a media griping thread, but Randy is far from the only media figure at a legacy publication with that arrogant attitude towards both the beat and the readers.

The Register is basically a cut and paste version of USA Today with limited local reporting anymore it is actually quite sad how far that paper has fallen, the Strib and Pioneer Press both still do a good job IMO. My local paper does a better job than the Register IMO.

When do those become a thing again? Automatically next season, with a new coach?
Well they stopped because Rulzz was sick and either no one wanted to try and fill his shoes cause he does an awesome job, or if its because no one cares enough. Probably a little of both. My guess is next season they will be back regardless of if prohm is still coach or someone new has taken over.

Local journalism in this country is basically dead. This is why CF is so special.

Bottom line: It's not something that Pandy should have asked but, he doesn't know any better and has to be the stupid one.

Dude should lose his press pass!!

He's a reporter, he has to ask about this kind of stuff. It is literally the job he is paid to do. Maybe there was a better way to do it. OK, very likely there was a better way to do it lol. This is Randy P we are talking about, he's not exactly on the Mt Rushmore of sports writers.

WRT to losing his press pass-- that's very much a TOE reaction. You make me uncomfortable, I will ban you from access to do your job. That is a highly insecure and thin-skinned reaction. I want our entire AD to be better than that. Part of their job is to answer tough (and often stupid) questions.

CF is great for ISU coverage and has helped fill a gap as local journalism has declined.

But too many people confuse fan web sites like CF with local journalism. The lines have grown increasingly blurred and there is definitely some overlap in each of their functions. But they are two distinct things.

I am not sure there is a lot of "objective," Walter Cronkite speaking to the ages journalism left out there.

Most media companies nowadays are built around doing fan service to their watchers or readers to ensure (1.) eyeballs, and therefore ad revenues and (2.) online subscriptions do not drop. This starts from the top. The New York Times is much more beholden to its online subscriber base now than it was 10 years ago, and considering that subscriber base would otherwise just hang out on Twitter for free if the Times did not give them what they want, they bow to it.

And what do people want, really? Their worldviews and beliefs confirmed back at them, only articulated in a much more detailed and convincing way than they can manage because newspaper writers tend to be good at that.

Information is free. Like I said, if you just want to know what is happening out there, then the Internet can supply you with whatever data you want. What the media sells nowadays is more of a sense of membership in a community or a personal identity and/or, in many cases and at the very same time as that, a list of enemies to hate.

tl;dr I think most media outlets, if not all, are basically fan sites at this point.

Randy probably asked the questions the way he did to try and validate information that was passed to him.

He may be a crazy ***hole with limited tact but that's probably the reason he asked the questions.
