Harbaugh

Whenever these Campbell to X speculations start flying each year I always go back to what Campbell said in an interview a couple years ago - when asked which college football coaches he admires or looks up to, he mentioned Kirk Ferentz, Bill Snyder, and Gary Patterson. What do they all have in common? Stayed for decades at a mid-tier program, built it up, and became legends at those institutions. I won't blame Campbell if he ever leaves, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't spend a decade-plus in Ames.

This got buried in another thread so I will post here:
I'll give people a couple of outside the box ideas for the next Michigan hire-

1). Eric Bienemy - KC Chiefs OC: he was a heck of a college player at Colorado so he knows the college landscape. He's probably regarded as the best OC in the NFL (fair or not given his talent). What michigan has lacked in the last few years is offensive development so he would bring this in spades.
2). Bob Stoops - been out out of the college game for a few years and refreshed. He would only come back to a traditional power, and michigan is stretching the boundary of that definition. Right now - the Cyclones are a better program really in every way than blue
3). Chris Peterson - this guy absolutely crushed it at Washington, taking the Huskies to a college football playoff (probably not easy to do with a non blue blood). He flat out is a great coach and extremely solid recruiter.
4). Kyle Wittingham Utah: all he has done is win at the power 5 level. Each year I look up in December and he has the Utes at 10-2 or 9-3 it seems. Would bring a ton of credibility to the role and has succeeded at a much lengthier clip than most (granted he's a lot older)
5). Urban Meyer - https://medium.com/platform-sports-...izing-plan-to-pursue-urban-meyer-d9b4e1b3284a
rumors starting to pick up. Urban Meyer is the golden goose for every blue blood right now, like him or not.

Outside the browns campbell is just not going to go to the nfl, kind of a stupid argument at this point. I'd even say the Browns are shaky, would you go somewhere Baker freaking Mayfield is your cornerstone piece?? yikes. Also I don't think campbell's motivating style translates to the pro's, he's just a better college coach. Nothing wrong at all with this by the way.

The Jets replace a new coach every time I go to the bathroom.

Poster 'Peter' was right, I also think Campbell is an awful fit for the Michigan culture. They are very much the wine and cheese crowd/ intellectual elite / snooty. That just isn't Campbell's style. Campbell seems to be the perfect fit for us, remember thats why he took the job in the first place!!

This matches what I was taught in elementary school, too - "Great Plains" and "Great Lakes" regions.

There was also a really odd region consisting of Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and W. Virginia, I think it was called "The Highlands States." Felt more like the textbook didn't know where to put those 4 states when learning States & Capitals, so they invented a region. :)
Looks more like the inbred region

Stop with the money. I do not think it will even be a small motivation. History of program, can we win the National Championship, Recruit nationally for 4 and 5 stars. League school is in. Maybe location. Is coming back to the Midwest a priority for CMC and staff. I have no inside knowledge. Just my opinion.
If you think that is dumb then Lord help you.

Drop the plan for an entertainment venue between Hilton and Jack Trice. Give the money to Coach C!

I also forgot to include in the list of potentials for mich...... motivational speaker extraordinaire/used car salesman/everyone poops enthusiast PJ FLECK. He has looked ready to jump from MN since his initial press conference.
But, the guy can really recruit and coach some. Whether he's better than campbell is highly debatable.

I also think Luke Fickell will be in that running as he has crushed it at Cincinnati (this is all assuming it opens by the way, it may not until 2022). Luke Fickell probably wants the Ohio St job, but that will be locked up as long as Ryan Day is there, so that will be a long time.

South Carolina just had there best player quit the team. With the Harbaugh rumors I wonder if any Wolverine draft kids will quit. Btw I hate they use the term opt out. If you are midway through the season, you quit
How many millions is Coach Mush getting paid not to work? I dont blame these kids for saying F It and making sure they do what they have to do to get theirs.

I think we’ve circled back to the point about “back to the Midwest”.

He’s in the Midwest.
Not at all. The points about what I felt CMC would most be interested in for a future job was said to be dumb. It was alot more accurate than thinking money would be a driving factor. I have kept names out of this post to protect the stupid. :jimlad:

IMO Campbell doesn't take a job where he can't install his culture. Michigan has its own culture, and to change that into what Matt would want is a 4 year process before you can say its his team.

He isn't a good fit at Michigan. He may be a good fit at other programs larger than ISU, just not Michigan.

I used to work with a guy that was from Ohio and had a large network from the area. One of those people was I believe a HS scout? I can’t remember exactly what his position was but I remember my coworker saying that he had very close ties to Matt Campbell from the Toledo days.
According to my coworker, echoing what his “Scout from Ohio” told him was that “the two jobs CMC would take in a heartbeat was either Ohio State or Michigan.
This was about a year ago so at first I was a bit scared but I’d be curious to see if this has since changed.

I think we all got burned by Fred. But one of the main differences is Fred never denounced the rumors of him ever leaving and Matt does it hard every single time. Could he leave? Sure. But his behavior is certainly night and day compared to Hoiberg.

This baffles me. All anyone needed to do was read Hoiberg’s initial contract in 2010, and any of the subsequent ones, to see the microscopic buyout for leaving for the NBA. The writing was on the wall from Day 1. Same with Nebraska: he went in there planning to stay 3-5 years.

I have no idea if Campbell will leave for Michigan, or anywhere else this year, but think that most ISU fans, if asked 5 years ago, would take the deal in a heartbeat.
