Max Von Sydow Passes

RIP Brewmaster

He was really good in an HBO movie called Citizen X. It was quite a while ago, probably 20 years or more, but it was about a Russian serial killer. Based on a true story. Highly recommend

Also in the Redford CIA movie, "Three days of the Condor".

My favorite role of his was in Dune.

Bad movie -- but Von Sydow did an admirable job as Liet-Kynes. Acting was not the problem in that movie; the script and special effects were just bad.

He was a total BA as Ming the Merciless, however. Easily the best thing about that movie save for the Queen soundtrack. He definitely owned all his roles.

RIP

I have a soft spot for that movie. It was the first serious sci-fi I remember watching.
Also, the "Special TV Edition" (3 hour cut) is the only way to watch it.

I am as big of a Dune fanatic as you are going to find, and I will still go to war for the mini-series version, which has its flaws but at least tries to faithfully present the story and the world of Frank Herbert (albeit with a very limited budget).

The 1984 movie has its moments and its highlights, but the special effects are bad and there are far too many changes to the science fiction concepts and the philosophy and morality behind the original novel to make it salvageable.

You are right the longer cuts are much better, but there are still too many problems with it. At least the longer cuts allow the film to take its time about the world-building in some places and do not edit down the plot to incoherence.

I do like that Toto soundtrack, though.

I watched it as a kid and my opinion to this day is pretty much unchanged. Its kinda weird but the part where they ride the giant worms is badass!

One of the most underrated actors ever. He was never in the limelight just did his movies and lived a pretty quiet/secluded life.

Makes zero sense that he wasn't nominated for The Exorcist.

His best movies/roles include:

The Exorcist
Shutter Island
Minority Report
Hannah and Her Sisters
Three Days of the Condor
