The good people at Overhead Door of Fort Dodge showed up bright and early yesterday to fix my garage door problem (broken chain). They installed a new opener, including a wireless entry pad on the exterior, which we didn't have before.

It works fabulous! Mostly, it's much quieter than the old one. That used to drive me nuts. I actually stood in the garage and ran it up and down a couple times, marveling at how quiet it is. :)

Mine is somewhat quieter after Overhead Door replaced my heavy solid wood door. Still no where near as quiet as the opener at Mom's house.

I stapled my finger once in grade school. We were dicking around shooting each other with staples and my finger somehow moved when I shot and one of the prongs went straight into the pad of my index finger. I still remember how it hurt initially, but not at all shortly after, so I started playing with it, spinning it around and stuff. I thought it was so cool how I could hear it scraping the bone underneath.

A few years ago we were re-roofing the house - after yet another hailstorm - and I was moving the nail gun across in my hand with my finger on the trigger. Brushed the trip against my shoe and promptly shot a nail through the tip of my sneaker. Just missed the big toe. Lucky!!!!

I've done the same thing with a roofing nailer. I nailed the toe of my boot and even caught my sock, barely missed my toes.

I can't say how many times in my life I have shot a staple into a finger when trying to get a stapler unjammed.
I just try to stay away from them now if at all possible.
Staple gun or regular

I was talking to the gf on the phone (she can get long winded), I was messing around with a couple cluster of staple gun staples, tried to break a few off. Finger slipped and put a pretty decent gash in the tip of my right index finger.

Still kinda bleeding off and on today. Making life difficult during work.

Full disclosure: I have never stapled myself or nailed myself with a nail gun.

Worst nailing thingie was smashing my thumb with a 24-oz framing hammer just before I supposed to drive to Boundary Waters with CWW#2. In that instant before the pain started I looked and saw the waffle pattern from the hammer face on my thumb and thought "Oh, ****, this is gonna hurt". Drove that afternoon with my thumb on the air conditioner vent trying to chill the throbbing.

PS Still remember exactly what I was hammering: 10d nails through 1/2" plywood in interior of the stair tower of the house I now live next door to. I remember cursing those ******* 10d's like 4" o.c. and the damn structural engineer (can we use the 8d's? No!) that designed that "diaphragm" detail. BTW, 1979 or 1980!

/end daily flashback

Not trying to be too judgy, but isn't a waffled 24-oz hammer a little overkill for 10d's through 1/2" plywood?

I had a screw put into the end of my middle finger when a carpenter missed the stud putting up sheetrock right where my finger was. I had already had a tetanus shot a month earlier from when I had stepped on a nail so some antibiotic ointment, gauze and tape was all I did. I would cut scar tissue off the tip of my finger for practically 20 years.

Yes, I'm sure that extra 1/4" made all the difference. Oh, and the additional, what - .005" in diameter?

Years ago, a fellow employee shot himself in the meaty part of his thigh with a nail gun - 8D (2 1/2" long) ring shank nail. The nail laid flush against his blue jeans, when he sat down it literally looked like you could brush the nail head off his leg.

He wasn't really too bad until we took him to the ER and the doc used a pliers to pull the nail out. Blood squirted everywhere. He nearly fainted.

We all thought it was one of the coolest things we'd ever seen.

Cut me some slack, I was much younger then.
