Good read. I’m a firm believer that after a starter comes back from an injury, they get their job back until they prove they no longer deserve it.

Generally, I would agree about starters not losing their spot because of injury. But Wigginton only started 1 game this past season before getting injured. Sure he started in 2017/18, but that was a bad team and there was a lot of player turnover. The Cyclones won games while Wigginton was out, so I understood Prohm's decision to make him 6th man. To have that offensive spark off the bench, benefited the team.

Should Wigginton eventually have started when the team went through its late season funk? IMO Yes. Should Prohm have been less rigid, always waiting until the 14 minute mark or start the 2nd half after a strong 1st half? IMO Yes

I played with a lot of guys who were talented but played less than lesser talented players because those talented players didn't work as hard and/or didn't execute their assignments as well as the lesser talented players.

That's fine and understandable, I've been on both sides as a player and coach, but how do we know Wigginton wasn't working hard or executing his assignments?

I saw plenty of other guys not executing their assignments who were safely in the starting lineup all season, with no repercussions for horrible play.

So ISU isn't the kind of place for kids to showcase their skills for the NBA?

I don't get it. He and Shayock were clearly our most talented players last year. It's just crazy to me that Prohm would start two freshman ahead of Lindell. That's honestly when I started questioning how he was running the program.

A players "talent" is more that just how many points he can score. Things like turnovers and bad defense cost a team points- so to focus on one aspect of a players game is tunnel vision.

I think Prohm thought bringing Wigginton and Lard off the bench gave ISU its strongest offensive unit over the entire 40 minutes. So I think the 6th man role made sense- similar to Tyrus Magee.

You and I are of like minds about 99% of the time here at CF.....but I really have to say I disagree with this. CSP isn't trying to get these kids ready for the NBA. He's trying to make them a cohesive team so that 1) they can win games and 2) they become better people.

Huh? You may want to ask a parent of a high-major D1 player what coaches pitch during recruitment, that is a major piece.

Don't necessarily agree that LW should've started but I do agree that Prohm waited too long to make the initial substitutions. There were some nights that LW didn't warrant 30+ minutes but there were also nights (particularly later in the season) where he was shooting the lights out and needed to be in 35ish minutes. By waiting until the 14 minute mark to sub, Prohm automatically capped LW at 28 min.

How did he get subbed out in the 4th Quarter of the TCU game?

Iowa State sophomore guard Lindell Wigginton is substituted out of the game following a foul during the fourth quarter of the Iowa State vs TCU men’s basketball game held Feb. 9 in Hilton Coliseum. The Horned Frogs defeated the Cyclones 92-83 despite a surge from Iowa State in the last quarter.

And we didn’t surge in the last half of the second half anyway. We had a decent start to the second and that was all she wrote.

My five takeaways fwiw.

1. Going back to last summer this team performed about as well as expected. If we had known of all the injuries most would have been happy with a big 12 tourney title and an NCAA appearance.

2. This team seemed to lack “clutch” players. We were in position to win many times but with the exception of KState in the B12 tourney we seemed to miss shots and free throws that other (memorable) ISU teams seemed to make in similar situations.

3. If LW makes an NBA roster I don’t think he’s gonna be a starter so showcasing his ability off the bench probably offered a more realistic assessment for NBA scouts.

4. This team needed an alpha male!

5. I like the guys coming back and hoping for a healthy Solomon Young.

If LW even gets drafted last I knew it's not speculated that it would be in the first round so whether or not he started is moot.

Also if CSP is spending the season of ISU basketball worried about how a player looks for the NBA vs. ISU's season, he needs to go too. (I don't think he is which is why that sounds ridiculous)

You want to get five stars into the program? Gotta get them to the NBA, period. That's how it works.

IMO if a guy turns down an NBA opportunity to return to your program, you do everything you can to improve his draft stock the next year. That begins with STARTING him. Prohm didn't do Lindell any favors this year; he may not even be drafted now.
Technically every player has an NBA opportunity. The only question is how realistic is that opportunity. Just because he waited until the last second to decide last year doesn't mean he was going to get drafted.

Sorry, not familiar with ISTDaily. So anyone can just write what they want or think criticizing a coach from their own school? So it was an editorial sent in?
