Will Prohm ever win a championship?

You’re so disingenuous.

He just said that was his expectation for that team. This team is just as good as that team. People on both sides are moving the goalposts all the time. When they actually have to state their expectations they show their true colors and inconsistencies.

I'm not sure what you are holding me to outside of if we get a great seed in the tournament I hope we don't lose in the first round.

There is still a ton of basketball too be played, and if this team makes a run, no one will remember or care that TCU beat us by 3, when we went 2-20 from 3.

Prohm is not above criticism, but people are calling for him to be fired when the team has been in the top 25 most of the season is straight up nuts.

Who is calling for him to be fired? I see criticism on here for him but I haven’t see more than a single person calling for him to fired. I see a lot of criticism on the players who don’t get paid. Hell we have an entire thread devoted to Nick Babb and I don’t see the same people protecting him at all costs. Why not?

Oh let's see. Spitballing here...

  • He's taken us to a Sweet Sixteen
  • He's won a Big 12 Tourney title
  • He's won four league road games this year with two to play
    • This hasn't been done in close to 20 years by the way
  • He's finished with 12 league wins which ties the most Hoiberg had
  • His record on the road against ranked teams is impressive as hell

You're doing this wrong.

Fire Prohm.

Which part? That he thought the team should have gotten to the Elite 8 because the bracket set up for them. Or that this team is higher ranked per Kenpom. The bottom line is we have been extremely successful in 7 of the last nine years.

In that scenario this would be a disappointing season. I'm also hoping that doesn't happen.

I don't make the rules, but college basketball success is determined about how you did when it mattered, if my memory serves me correctly that bracket was a perfect set up for Iowa State. Making the year we were a 3 seed and a lost in the first round a very disappointing season. But hey at least Fred didn't make Jameel practice. I would have traded that conference tourney title for a deep run to the Elite 8 in a second.

Did you know if this team wins a game in the tournament, prohm will have matched the number of ncaa wins of his predecessor?

Also, losing as a 3 seed after the way the end of that season played out was a pretty big fail. If this team wins out and gets a 3 and wins the big 12 tourney and loses in the first round, that would be a pretty big fail too. Of course that team also danced through minefields for a month prior to that game, but were fortunate enough to have cooperation in coming from behind to win.

That team was never going to make a deep run. You build a 15-20 point defecit 6 games in a row and eventually you will get burned. This team hasn’t done that nearly as much.

Most likely. But look at Texas. They are 15-12 on the year. Auburn entered the year as a top 15 team. They are unranked and .500 in the SEC and haven't beat a ranked team all year. They are 14th in KenPom.
Good use of some outliers to make your point. Most analytic-based metrics are pretty good at making sense of who is "good". The most important thing to remember, however, is they are better used as probabilistic measures rather than deterministic ones. Carry on.

And would have gotten that win total in a season less than his predecessor.

Wait, that team was a standard you used to talk about how prohm failed his first year.

Uab sucked, and UCLA had no heart. That wasn’t a tough run to the second weekend.

My standard is the regular season primarily. Regular season conference title is the crown jewel. That is better in my mind than anything other than a Final 4. So when a team goes 12-6 or 13-5 in the conference then I’m not going to call the season a failure if they get bounced in March.

I said the same thing with the 16-17 squad after they got to 12-5 before the WV regular season finale. No matter how that season ended it would be a success. I’ve been consistent on my views about that.

How about the North Carolina game without Niang? Probably just got lucky late in that game. Let’s just destroy every Cyclone accomplishment in the last 7 years. We probably should have just fired Fred after that UAB game.

Didn’t need to. He was leaving regardless.

So you are going to say uab was good at 19-15? You’re going to pretend UCLA was any good too?

But never fail to deflect.

A Larson, here is your straw man you’ve been desperately trying to project.

Yes because real life is exactly like being a fan of some amateur basketball team. Good call.

Baylor has been a sh*tty matchup for ISU for years, and TCU seems to be too. Splitting with both would have been great, and it was *this* close 3/4 times, but if you really look at it, the way those teams play is a problem for this ISU group.

SY is someone that would have provided help in both games as he provides size and some length and iirc was pretty good at guarding the pick and roll.

Now you'll go have a meltdown and scream outside for a while and come back and say that CSP wouldn't have played SY, but you don't actually know that...it's just all a part of your magnified anger.

SY is one of the best on the team at guarding pick and roll. He is very good at sticking to his man and bodying up under the basket. Something that is truly missed this year.

He had the perfect opportunity this year. Kansas is down and ISU had more talent than anybody else in the league. Instead of capitalizing, his team just completely implodes with inexcusable home losses and uninspired efforts against sub 500 teams. If he cant do it this year, I don't see how he is ever going to. I don't think he is building anything here. Just stuck on mediocrity.
This year is not mediocraty. Until now we were rated, still are projected 4 or 5 seed, and above .500 on conference. As far as winning league, you were flat out wrong in thinking we could win it from the beginning. Too many young guys that are being depended on. Now next year with these guys all back, we have a shot.

UAB wasn’t any good. Apparently UCLA was good enough to beat a top #25 SMU team. Should we have won two games? Of course that was our seed line. Was the season an underachieving one....not to me. I don’t think we overachieved but that season had some great wins.

So tell me how many years did Fred’s teams underachieve? Have any of Steve’s teams underachieved at Iowa State?

I remember a bunch of ppl on this forum making fun of Scott Drew's TO usage, where are all those people with how Prohm uses his? What about trying to set up a play out of a media timeout or time out? How about prepping the team for the upcoming opponent. Everyone in the nation knows what Baylor does, REBOUND, shouldn't we have prepped for that?
A bunch of other teams didnt prep for that either. Last I checked, Baylor has won a lot of games. You need to remember other teams pay there coaches and give out scholarships just like we do. Give the other teams and coaches in league some credit.
