2/22-24 Winter Weather Thread

So if I have plans to drive to Mpls tomorrow morning, is this freezing rain going to be problematic?

Family is supposed to drive up tomorrow morning from DSM to our place in MSP. It looks like tomorrow morning MIGHT be ok, depending on how bad the ice gets. Up here it's supposed to be rain/freezing rain early. However, Sunday (when they would be driving back) looks awful. We've told them to stay home and come another weekend.

Blowing snow on Sunday? It looks like the snow will be out by early Sunday, but that doesn’t mean travel won’t be difficult

From the NWS forecast for Mason City...looks like Sunday driving will be rough, even without snow coming down.

Family and I are suppose to go to Lincoln NE this weekend- kids and wife still want to go but I shut that talk down quick because they aren’t the ones actually doing the white-knuckle-high-stress driving in that crap coming home Sunday afternoon. A 3 hour normal trip could turn into a 5-6 hour trip real quick

Probably a good call. You're right; early tomorrow should be OK but Saturday night into Sunday...gross. Stay off the roads.

Des Moines NWS has now issued Winter Weather Advisory from 9pm tonight into Saturday. Also has Blizzard warnings out (Mason City area: WWA 9pm Fri-6pm Sat, Blizzard Warning 6pm Sat-6pm Sun).

So what’s going on here? Seems Des Moines is going to miss the worst of it?

The short answer seems to be 'tough to tell'.

Really depends what the temperatures are when the rain\snow starts rolling through. If the freezing line is farther west, we dont get much snow, we get rain. If the freezing line is eastward, des moines gets nailed with a bunch of snow.

And especially with the expected sharp dropoffs outside of the band that gets dumped on, it seems like a very difficult one for forecasters to give a call on one way or another.

I've posted this on multiple social media platforms. Still applies

Depends on what your definition of "worst of it" is. If your definition is strictly snow then they will yes miss the worst of it. You will however get rain, sleet and freezing rain at various times before switching to snow with very strong winds. To me that is still a nasty weekend.
