Things to do while in San Antonio

Ok...insider report...

I don't like chicken as a rule...this place makes chicken that's as addictive as crack.
Come early or late...or you'll wait.

Pollos Asados Los Nortenos 4642 Rigsby Ave, San Antonio, TX 78222

Coopers BBQ in New Braunfels...they do awesome bbq.

If you go to Fredericksburg and stay over night...go to troisestate.net for dinner & overnight.
Guy that owns it is wild dude, all types of crazy stuff he collects. Place is a museum. His last 'house' was the castle from Spy Kids.

he was also on "Barry'd Treasure"

If you drive...consider going up / or down 281 to Dallas vs 35. It takes you through the Hill Country. Not really much further...and you avoid the BS that is Austin. Also don't drive through Austin after 10pm...and be careful in San Antonio as both have endless DWI problems. : (

If you drive and take the 130 Bypass to the East of Austin, stop off in Lockhart for some of the best BBQ in Texas at either Kreuz Market or Smitty's Market. No plates or BBQ sauce. Just good tender and smoky meat served on butcher paper with a couple of slices of white bread.

If you take I-35 thru Austin stop at Franklin's BBQ. Be prepared for a multi-hr wait though.
I've been to Smittys and Kreuz and both are great. If, I had to pick one it would be Kreuz Market. Love their sausage. If someone is driving back to Iowa, I would make it worth your time to bring me back 25 of them.
I've met Aaron Franklin a couple times and I'm sure his stuff is really good, but to stand in line for hours to pay $25/lb for brisket is crazy. Here is a picture of the line the Tuesday after ISU played in Austin.
When in Austin, I make the trip to Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood. $25 all you can eat, served family style and since they don't sell alcohol they allow BYOB.

I was just looking on a map and saw "China Grove" just southeast of San Antonio. Is that the "China Grove" in the Doobie Brothers song? I'm assuming so, now that I pay attention to the lyrics:

When the sun comes up on a sleepy little town
Down around San Antone
And the folks are risin for another day
Round about their homes
The people of the town are strange
And they're proud of where they came
Well, you're talkin bout china grove
Oh, china grove

Disappointed to find out that the song is pretty much fiction that used the name "China Grove" for a place that the author didn't really know existed when he wrote the song. Strange, pretty disappointing back story to the song now that I researched it, other than how odd it can be sometimes in the production of music that just happens.

China Grove is just a blip on the map when you drive through it. Of course San Antonio is sprawling out all over.

I lived in SA for awhile and have family there that have lived there for 40 years. Non-riverwalk food/restaurant recommendations:

Taco Haven - 3119 S Gevers...local taco joint, the tortillas are excellent.
The Cove- 606 W. Cypress...All locally sourced food, good fish tacos, live music, playground for kids
Cheesy Jane's - 4200 Broadway...across from Incarnate Word Campus, 50's style diner with really good (and huge) malts
Torchy's Tacos - Several locations....Fast food tacos that franchised off of an original food truck
Magy's Tamales & Barbacoa - 5721 Commerce St. - Really good authentic homemade tamales and barbacoa

If you have a car and want to get out of the city -
Salt Lick BBQ- 18300 FM 1826 in Driftwood. BYOB/cash only pit BBQ. Some of the best I've ever had.

Any recommendations for those of us that will be walking on the riverwalk?

The Cove looks familiar. Like it was on Triple D or something.

Depending on which part of the RW you are on, you can find just about anything that you want down there. It's funny, when I first went down there, I thought the RW was great, but then rarely ever went when I lived there. I know my family avoids it like the plague....nothing wrong with it, just touristy. Anyway, if you're up at the north end of the RW near the Pearl Brewery, that's a cool area to check out. La Gloria is a Mexican place (not my favorite, but ok) near there along with several other bars and restaurants in the Pearl Plaza. On the other end of the RW near a lot of the hotels you'll find a lot of the typical chains, from higher end ones like Landry's Seafood to Whataburger...you can get just about anything you want. There are some non-chain places sprinkled in and some ok tex-mex, but I'm not as familiar with the hidden food options down there. If you're not opposed to walking a bit off the RW, go down to Market Square. Mi Tierra Cafe y Panderia is a great little bakery with authentic mexican sweet deserts and a full menu...I think it's open 24/7 also.

That's certainly possible, it's a unique place. There's a carwash and laudromat attached to the restaurant. Worth a stop if you're in the area, it's rarely busy during the week, but can get packed on the weekends especially at night.

Torchy's breakfast burritos are awesome... Gonna have to get a few on the drive back, they have a few austin locations too.

We are with the Alumni group so we are near the Alamodome and the gob of motels. The Market Square sounds nice, but looks like quite a walk. I might try the Whataburger just to say I did. Wife wants to go to the Rain Forest Cafe, which I am sure has really bad food, well, you know. Probably try to find a few non-franchise places somewhere along the way. The Marriott serves a breakfast, but at $22 a person we will probably walk somewhere for that.

So if you're staying in the riverwalk area and want to go to the Pearl district area, are there trolleys or anything that will get you there, or do you pretty much have to drive yourself? I'm not really interested in taxi or uber.
