ESPN Recap?

Open hand vs closed hand I don’t think is relevant. I still think Montgomery lunges and the second swing by the Baylor player makes it look like a punch as he tries to duck the punch.

You guys crack me up. I absolutely love Monty. Dude is a workhorse that just gives his all every play. One of my all time favorite players. But him winding up his right arm to take a swing is clear as day.

Sure, #21 is trying “sell” the penalty on Butler by holding his leg, but you are going to believe that Butler couldn’t release from that? Did you see Butler manhandle the Kansas defender last week? Butler seems to engage and commit his body weight/knees into the Baylor player more after being held and hooked down.
You've been a member for 4 years and have only posted 300 times, and this is where you feel the most inclined to speak up? I smell ********, and I've got an accurate meter.

Okay forum police, check your meter and if you feel inclined, check my post history.

I do feel inclined to post, however, when I feel emotion gets in the way of objectivity.

Sorry, but if you are Butler once you get #21 to the ground you have to let him go. You don’t reposition to put your knees into another player’s chest or throat.

I don’t quite see the Butler’s legs getting hooked either.

Sure, I love seeing a player defend a teammate, but I have high character expectations for ISU and they lost their composure a bit.

Baylor player grabbed Butler’s knees and held them. Trying to get a personal foul call probably.

Edwards went into that fighting immediately. Then Edwards attacked Montgomery and throwing a punch going OVER the ref and making physical contact with ref. Actually grazing the ref with an errant punch. And continuously throwing punches. That should be a multiple game suspension for Edwards.

Baylor tried to take David Montgomery out of the game. Pretty obvious

The Butler situation actually starts just after the snap when the defender is hand checking Butler, but all in all it’s a penalty on both sides. The end zone view of the Montgomery situation is not so good for us. It does look like Montgomery tries to throw a punch but somewhat understandable considering #52 just attacked him over a referee. I would not be surprised if the Big 12 rules Montgomery can play after a review of the situation. I almost think it’s better if he has to sit. Open up the offense in the first half and then let David take over the second.

Expecting to see Real Mitchell?

This. And what a total wimp move to hide behind the ref while throwing a slap. His body even made contact with the ref. It wasn't much, but the official could have been hurt. Montgomery should not have thrown a punch. What good is it going to do to pinch a guy in the helmet (insert Peter Griffin laugh). He's lucky he didn't break his hand. Butler's block was not illegal, but was a bit shady. A lot of you may disagree, but if Jalen Hurd would have done that to Peavy then you would be freaking out about it.

Oh well, we won the game.

Ummm... no. We are playing against their favorite team so that's not going to happen.

I was referring to the written recap article on the ESPN. The recap video just shows the play in which the fight takes place.

While the out-of-bounds play against Montgomery is what raised tensions, it cannot be a justification for what Butler did to #21 (what ultimately escalated the fighting).

I found the articles focusing on Montgomery’s disqualification and not providing more context more apt articles of poor reporting. Mitch Sherman’s ESPN article being one of them.

Are you ******* insane?

The Butler situation can be attributed to both him and the defender in my mind. Butler continued to hold him after the play and it looked like he was talking smack. That must have bruised the defender's ego because he wrapped his arm around Hakeem's knee and wouldn't let him get up. Then instead of awkwardly trying to unwrap the guy's arm Hakeem decided to put his knees on the guy's chest and force him to stop.
Both players escalated the play.

Does’t really matter whether it was an open fist or a slap, Montgomery got hit full on the helmet. It didn’t hurt him, wasn’t going to. I love the kid, but he shouldn’t have reacted the way he did.

On the slap vs punch front, it looks to me like the Baylor player fully intended it to be a punch. Only, at the last second, he realized that he was further away than he thought, so he opened his hand for the extra reach. Just to make sure he made contact.

Just my two cents.

Baylor player grabbed Butler’s Jersey and pulled him to the ground and then grabbed Butler behind the knees in what appeared to be an attempt to draw a flag. Baylor Defensive Back should have gotten a penalty. Defensive holding.

Don’t you have a Branch Davidian to get back to?

The degree of pain experienced by DM isn’t very relevant.

Should DM have walked away after getting punched? Maybe, but I don’t think it’s too egregious of an error to charge someone that punched you. Maybe the cold got to Baylor, but they were looking for a fight.

We stooped to their level and we shouldn't have. DM definitely took a swing and should sit the first half against Texas. No room in the game for that. (Nobody is mentioning the fact that he sought 52 out specifically before the melee and then squared up with him....I love DM, but he's not innocent) I get it, emotions running high, cheap shots and trash talk out of Baylor, but he can't do that.

The Butler stuff that started it was meh imo. Both at fault there. It's the gang of Baylor thugs piling on that should have been controlled and cleaned up better by the refs. That is inexcusable.

It marred what was an awesome outcome for the Cyclones. Not to mention, we we're on the cusp of stepping on their throats in a rout and that changed the dynamic imo. Great win, but that was disappointing.

You have to be blind or an idiot to not see that Baylor's player has his arms hooked around Butler's legs.

By “he sought him out” you mean pulled him off the gang beating of Butler?

The only thing DM did that’s slightly wrong is charging the thug after he was punched, but that’s not fault in the incident.
