KU HC David Beaty has been fired

They cannot possibly have a worse hire than the last three.

They could overpay for someone who had success at a better program, like Les Miles, invest a ton of money into him, and have him retire in a few years without actually winning anything.

A lot of KU fans seem to think Les Miles will be their savior. He had built in recruiting base at LSU and tons of backing with great assistants.

He won't have either of those at KU. He wont even have great facilities by LSU standards.

KU needs a young hot coach who wants his shot at a P5 job. He needs to come in hot, win some games, move to a bigger job, and set up the next coach for success.

KC sports talk this morning was primarily focused on the Chiefs win over the Browns. The Beaty firing and KU search was second fiddle, and did get some brief air time before returning to Mahomes and the upcoming schedule.

Both stations basically said it was probably inevitable, especially after KU brought in a new AD. I think the fan support there was lower than at any point I can remember at ISU, and I've been going to games in Ames since the Walden years. Kind of have to fire Beaty if they're drawing less than 15K and over half of those are wearing cardinal and gold. I'm positive KU hoops drew more than that for their exhibition game.

The first name they tossed around was Les Miles, but the hosts were quick to point out his age, and weather or not he would actually have the energy and want to to stick out a building project because of that. They said he'd be close to 70 by the time KU was competitive again. I don't think Beaty will leave the cupboard bare, but its been such a malaise after Mangino was fired that someone will have to change the culture first.

Les coached as Oklahoma State first for four years. Took over a bad team in a very tough division. First year only won four games, I think, but beat #4 Oklahoma in the last game of the season. Went to bowl games his next 3 season. His second season he again beat #3 Oklahoma and won the Big 12 Coach of the Year.

I realize that OSU had more tradition and a better starting spot then (even though I believe that was before Boone T. Pickens was pumping money into the AD) than what Kansas would be now, but it’s not like he inherited a gift there like when he went to LSU.

If they hired a coach like Les, they will have great assistants.

Will a guy like Les make KU football relevant? Maybe not, but it wouldn’t come close to the disastrous hires of Beaty and Weiss. They have been horrible under Beaty and only have 1 commit for next year and a upperclassmen heavy roster. The only way it could get worse is to also add getting caught cheating.

But he was a lot younger.

Oh I realize that. But that was also 17 years ago. Not sure Les at 65 will have the same kind of energy now. OSU has always had easy access to Texas and was not far removed from good teams with Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas.

OSU also actually cares about football. The biggest problem with KU is that they really don't care. Period. They don't like being associated with terrible records, but they wouldn't really show up even if they had a 6-6 year this year. Basketball is all that matters, they just don't want to be embarrassed by the football team.

OSU was down, but it didn't take much of a push to get fans and donors on board for Les. KU wants to win right away, but there's no way that's happening.

True, but he’s not Jon Gruden. He’s been known for keeping a healthy work/life balance. He wasn’t working 20 hour days and sleeping in the office like Gruden does.

But doesn’t Kansas need someone willing to do that? They need someone young and hungry. Not someone who could take or leave the job.

I don’t want to spend too much time on Miles because I honestly don’t see it happening, but Kansas needs someone that can change the culture first and foremost, not someone that will immediately get them winning 6+ games. You can’t have the latter without the former.

No, not at all. Winning is winning but if they don't drop that first touchdown and get points on the one they fumbled away, the look of that game changes. Our offense still relies on individuals making incredible plays and we get nothing easy.

The first and third touchdowns were easy. Nothing really incredible about either play.

That first one wasn't that easy and it relied on someone winning their battle, making a pretty damn good catch on a less than perfect ball. The third was actually great play design. It makes zero sense to put it on film in that situation but it was great design.

You figured this was coming with a new AD. Makes sense to do it now so you can start the search before other schools. It will be interesting to see who they get.

Kansas should go after a guy like Will Healy at Austin Peay. This article was posted here a while back... has landed top (FCS) recruiting classes, bring lots of energy and sounds like a guy who could be up for a challenge like coaching at KU

The first touchdown was easy. KU bit hard on the play action and Purdy hit Butler on a simple slant. The safety was out of position because of the play action so Butler just had to run straight down the field with no one in front of him. While the throw wasn't NFL perfect, it was good enough to get the TD. Simple play design; good execution. Touchdown!

Okay, I'll concede the two touchdowns. 14 points is hardly inspiring against a barely top-100 S&P defense.
