"Between January 1, 2017, and April 25, 2017, there were 31,497 drivers traveling 71 mph or faster.

While the cameras were not issuing citations from January 1 to May 22, 2018, there were 122,594 instances of drivers speeding faster than 71 mph in the 60 mph zone. That's an increase of 91,097 instances when a citation would have been issued."

It's interesting to me that they mention how many more people were speeding but didn't mention the number of accidents during this same time. I have a strange feeling that if that number went up, you'd see it reported.

I drove through C.R. in recent years in the areas where there's some speed cameras. Didn't speed. Didn't get a ticket. Also, got to my destination in about the same time as speeding would have.

Don't speed = no ticket + you get to the place you're trying to get to.

Genius.

The funny thing is you can still speed if you so choose, just not 10+ mph over.

Accident data didn’t support the money grab.

Yeah the cameras just are kind of like a pace car. You slow down wait wait wait. Go under them and the green flag flies.

Honestly, the speed limit should probably be higher anyway. There are times it won't go that fast, but there's no reason it needs to be 55\60 most of the time, not since the redo 10+ years ago. And the times it isn't will be naturally slowed by traffic itself.

Guys guys guys, they're just enforcing the laws. It's not a change in policy. Where was your outrage when the police wrote the tickets and Obama was president?

Especially since back then that money was going to welfare queens on the east side that we’re using it to buy cartons of Newport’s.

Now at least it’s going to go to private schools.

Pretty sure this is the theme song for any city that uses speed cameras:

It's the laziest way to enforce a law with minimal effort while bringing in revenue. It's funny how they released the stats of speeding violations while the cameras were not issuing tickets but did not release the stats of accidents that happened in that stretch of I235 at the same time. I have driven that stretch over many years to get to work and the bulk of the accidents that happen on I235 were not from speeding and happened during rush hours. I will bet you the tickets those cameras issued during rush hours in the AM and PM hours were practically non-existent.

Why is efficiency considered lazy?

Ultimately, the law specifies the speed. It sounds like the complaints here should be to the ones setting the speed limit, not the way they choose to enforce that. If you want tot drive 70 mph, tell your elected officials to change the law to make it happen rather than whine about how your being treated unfairly for breaking the law.

Could the DOT just go and raise the speed limit or would they need Des Moines permission?

I don't like that they ticket the vehicle, not the driver. My SIL borrowed my truck a couple years back. Guess who got the ticket for his speeding? He paid it, but if he didn't, I would've had to.

You can respond of who was driving the vehicle and the ticket will be re-issued to them.

But that's no different than if they had got a parking ticket. The vehicle owner is responsible for those regardless of who parked improperly. Should we change that too?
