Such a beautiful song. It's pretty tough not to shed a little tear during it.One of my all-time favorites:
The big rumor shortly after this song came out was that it was supposedly about heroin addiction - hence "Sail on, silver girl". Never been verified.
Written by Lennon/McCartney song, clearly a "Paul" tune. A few info-nuggets follow the clip (subject to verification by @MeanDean)
(1) McCartney apparently wrote it when he was 16.
(2) He didn't think it was good enough to be a Beatles single.
(3) Peter Asher (brother of Paul's girlfriend Jane) asked McCartney if P&G could use the song after signing a record contract in '63.
(4) One of only 2 Lennon-McCartney songs to reach No. 1 in U.S. when recorded by non-Beatles artists. The other: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (Elton John).
One of my favorite slightly obscure soul ditties.
Holy crap. I started playing this song and it blew my mind. The intro is sampled as the main beat for a song I really love. I had no idea where it came from so that's pretty awesome.
